Frankfurt: Georg Rab for Sigmund Feyerabend and the author, 1564.

Title printed in red and black with calligraphic ornamentation and large woodcut device, 2 (of 3) double-page woodcuts and about 100 woodcut illustrations and diagrams in the text. (Lacking one double-page woodcut, dampstained, A1 repaired along inner margin crossing text, a few leaves becoming loose). 19th century German boards (rubbed). Provenance: Raimundt Pius Fickhardt, the dedicatee (ownership inscription on title); acquired from Ars Libri, 1998.

THE DEDICATEE'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Raimundt Pius Fickhardt is identified by the author as his godfather, eminent scholar and doctor of law ("Dem Ehrnvesten, Wirdigen und Hochgelehrten Raymundo Pio Fickhart beyder Rechten Doctorn, meinem Grossgünstigen Herrn, und lieben Gevatter.") A famous manual on perspective and draughtsmanship, prominently including the symmetrical proportions of men, women, children and horses. The book is expressly composed for the use of goldsmiths, painters, sculptors, stonemasons, joiners, etc. The beautiful woodcuts are very original and forceful although based on those of Dürer and Beham. Heinrich Lautensack was a member of the celebrated Nuremberg family of artists and had settled in Frankfurt as a goldsmith, painter and engraver. Adams L-290; Berlin Kat. 4691; VD 16, L 728.
