Description

GOLTZIUS, Hubertus (1526-1583). Lebendige Bilder gar nach aller Keysern von C. Iulio Caesare bisz auff Carolum V und Ferdinandum seinem Bruder verhaftet. Antwerp: Gillis Coppens van Diest, 1557.

2υo (305 x 221 mm). Elaborate title border in black, tan and green, 133 large chiaroscuro portrait medallions (plus 16 empty woodcut roundel frames for never-completed portraits), in one or two tones of ochre and brown. (Printed numerals in right hand margin of a1v, a6r, b1r and b6r effaced in ink). 17th-century German sprinkled calf, gilt arms of Johann Georg Freiherr von Pichelstorff und Altenburg (some minor rubbing). Provenance: acquired from Goodspeed's Rare Books, 1964.

FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN. Of the intended 149 medallions only 133 were completed in the Latin, German and Italian editions, and the etched outlines are left blank. The colors vary slightly between the different editions with various modifications to adjust the definition. See Nancy Bialler Chiaroscuro Woodcuts.
