Caspar von Zumbusch Herzebrock 1830 – 1915 Rimsting am Chiemsee Design equestrian monument Rudolf of Habsburg Material: stucco bronzed 1898 Height 61 cm, length 52 cm, width 22 cm Design for a monument to the 1st Roman-German king from the Habsburg dynasty, in front of Heldenplatz in Vienna. Caspar von Zumbusch planned the erection of a monumental equestrian statue of Rudolf of Habsburg as a counterpart to the monument to Maria Theresa, between the Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History in Vienna, commissioned by Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1898. The monumental statue was to be erected at this place after the demolition of the old castle gate. Unfortunately, this never happened. And so the only surviving work of this historically so important order is the model, which we auction here. An old photograph of the design of the equestrian statue is shown in Zumbusch's monograph under No. 86. This work of art, unfortunately never realized, is an important work of Austrian history. In terms of art history, the Bozzetto is a museum rarity and would enrich any public collection dealing with this period of Vienna's history!
