Ignacio Zuloaga Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1870 - d. 1945

Ignacio Zuloaga y Zabaleta (July 26, 1870 – October 31, 1945) was a Spanish painter, born in Eibar (Guipuzcoa), near the monastery of Loyola.

In his youth, he drew and worked in the armourer's workshop of his father, Plácido.[3] His father's craftmanship, a familial trade, was highly respected throughout Europe, but he intended his son for either commerce, engineering, or architecture, but during a short trip to Rome with his father, he decided to become a painter.[4] His first painting was exhibited in Paris in 1890.[5]

At the age of 18 he moved to Paris, settling in Montmartre, to find work and training as a painter. He was nearly destitute, and lived off some meager contributions by his mother and the benevolence of fellow Spaniards, including Paco Durrio, Pablo Uranga, and Santiago Rusiñol.[6]

After only six months' work he completed his first picture, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1890. Continuing his studies in Paris, where he lived for five years, he was in contact with post-impressionists such as Ramon Casas, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec, yet his tendencies were always to a thematic that was more ethnic in scope.

He attempted to gain success during a sojourn in London; but lackluster patronage led him to return to Spain, settling in Seville, then Segovia, and developed a style based on a realist Spanish tradition, recalling Velázquez and Murillo in their earthy colouring and genre themes. He painted portraits of attired bullfighters and flamenco dancers; or portraits of family members and friends in such attire. He also painted village dwarves (El enano Gregorio el Botero; Hermitage, St Petersburg, Russia) and beggars, often as stark figures in a dreary landscape with a traditional landscape or town in the background. He also painted some village-scape scenes.[7] He favored earth or muted tones, including maroon, black, and grey, with the exception of colorful folk attire or the bright red cassock in some paintings.

Zuloaga married Valentine Dethomas on May 18, 1899. Valentine's brother, Maxime Dethomas, was a fellow student of Zuloaga in Paris.

Zuloaga and his patrons felt slighted in 1900, when his painting Before the Bull-fight was rejected for inclusion into the Spanish representation at the Universal Exposition in Brussels. In 1899, one of his paintings exhibited in Paris had been purchased for the Luxembourg Palace. However, he did exhibit the painting at the Exposition of the Libre Esthetique in Brussels, and did see it acquired by the Modern Gallery in Brussels. He was accepted into the Venice Biennale in 1901 and 1903,[8] and displayed 34 canvases at the Barcelona International exposition of 1907.[9]

Among one of the more prominently displayed works is his Cristo de la Sangre (Christ of the Blood) or Hermandad del Cristo Crucificado (Brotherhood of the Crucified Christ), on display at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid. He also painted a similarly painting of individuals undergoing a traditional mortification of the flesh and a bleeding crucified Christ called The Flagellants (1900). These paintings were praised by Unamuno in his book on De Arte Pictorico as being honest representation of Spain: a Spain religious and tragic, a black Spain.[10] rooted in the particularly Spanish Catholic fascination with mutilating penance.

Bagot Archaeological Gallery, Barcelona, 2015. Attached thermoluminescence test (TL). Exhibited in the house-museum of Zuloaga, located in the town of Zumaya (Guipúzcoa) / Ifergan Collection, Málaga (2018-2020)/ Feriarte, IFEMA (Madrid, 12-20 November 2022). Measurements: 13.5 cm. This relief fragment probably belonged to a larger funerary relief. Two figures are represented: a woman with himation and her hair tied back, accompanied by a child (Atis) wearing a Phrygian cap on his head. The woman depicted is the goddess Cybele, considered the mother goddess and riding in a chariot drawn by lions, part of which is possibly represented in the missing fragment. Cybele had a son named Atis, whom she abandoned, but when she met him she fell in love with him. It belonged to the painter Ignacio Zuloaga Zabaleta (Eibar, 1870-Madrid, 1945), one of the most outstanding painters of the 20th century. He won important national and international prizes and distinctions. Parisian critics described him as "the last great master of the Spanish School of painting".

Teresina Boronat was a successful Spanish dancer who settled in Paris. In 1927, she set up her studio in the district of Montmartre, a very busy environment for the Spanish artistic avant-garde exiled in Paris during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. Names like Ignacio Zuloaga, who staged some of the dances of his company, Pablo Gargallo or Pere Pruna resonated in an environment full of changes and artistic novelties. Son of the notable damascene artist Plácido Zuloaga, and nephew of Daniel Zuloaga, one of the most outstanding Spanish ceramists of his time, Ignacio Zuloaga worked as a child in his father's workshop, where he had his first contact with drawing and engraving. He later began studying engineering, but abandoned his studies to devote himself to painting. He acquired his artistic training at the Prado Museum, copying Ribera, Goya, Velázquez and El Greco, of whom he would be one of the first propagators. In 1887 he presented a painting at the National Exhibition in Madrid, entitled "A priest praying in an old room". After a first trip to Rome in 1889, where he imbibed the Renaissance masters, Zuloaga went to Paris, where he met French artists such as M. Dethomas and Rodin, with whom he became great friends. He also met Miguel Utrillo and Santiago Rusiñol, and with the latter he traveled again to Italy. In Paris he came to practice pointillism and impressionism, and participated in some group exhibitions at the gallery Le Bar de Boutteville, frequented by the symbolists. However, the search for his own roots took him to Andalusia, where he spent some time between 1894 and 1897. In the latter year, in Segovia, he painted "My uncle and my cousins", a painting that he presented at the Paris Salon and which was acquired by the French State. In 1898 he married and settled in Madrid, although he made frequent trips to the French capital. The following year he presented his "Family Portrait" at the Paris Salon, which was also acquired by the French Government. From 1903 onwards he took part in international exhibitions and his fame grew. Between 1906 and 1913 he worked in Segovia, attracted by the austerity of the Castilian landscape and the quiet and humble dignity of its inhabitants, influenced by the ideology of the Generation of '98. In 1908 he was invited to present an exhibition in New York. At the outbreak of World War I he returned to the Basque Country and lived in a 12th century monastery in Zumaya (Guipúzcoa), later converted into a museum, where he installed his rich collection of works of art, including paintings by El Greco and Goya. Such was his admiration for the Aragonese master that he even bought his birthplace in Fuendetodos. Likewise, in 1926 he acquired the castle of Pedraza (Segovia), also converted into a museum. Ignacio Zuloaga is today considered, together with Gutiérrez Solana, the continuator of the tradition of Spanish painting throughout the 20th century. He is currently represented in prominent museums such as the Prado (works attached to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía), as well as in others around the world such as the Orsay, the Rodin and the National de Versailles in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Metropolitan in New York, the Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, among others.

Firmado y fechado Signed and dated in Paris in 1917. Bibliography: - Martínez Sierra, G. et al. "Ignacio Zuloaga", Madrid, n/d. rep. plate 15. - Fanton Roberts, M. In 1918, Ignacio Zuloaga painted in Paris one of his most elegant female portraits, that of María Teresa de Llavallol, Mrs. Atucha. In an almost square format, the sitter advances towards the right side of the composition with a distinguished bearing, wearing a greenish ball gown, silver shawl and a shawl ruffled in the wind, which accentuates the sensation of movement in the painting, recalling the vibrant dynamism of Chéret's works. Zuloaga gives the model a monumentality that infuses the painting with a remarkable grandeur. To the erect posture and distinction, the expressiveness of the look in which the painter manages to convey the character and personality of the portrayed is added. The skies in the background, halfway between the storm and the twilight, infuse the work with an epic component that gives the model a grandiose air; all this fused in a beautiful and dreamlike composition that technically appeals to the resources of modern painting and poster art. . IGNACIO ZULOAGA Y ZABALETA (Éibar, Guipúzcoa, 1870 - Madrid, 1945). "Mme. Pineaud", ca. 1906. Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. With Spanish frame of the eighteenth century. Work published in "Pintors espanyols a París, 1880-1910". Measures: 55 x 45,5 cm; 69,5 x 61 cm (frame). In the magnificent oil painting presented here, Ignacio Zuloaga is faithful to his style, offering the viewer a work in which his genius is evident, which perpetuates the image of a traditional and traditional Spain. Zuloaga offers us the portrait of Mme. Pineaud, one of the portraitist's favorite models, with a deep gaze and dark black eyes, who protects her neck with a set of furs, wrapped in a shimmering light that radiates warmth and mystery. The woman's face stands out vividly illuminated by a clear and natural light, which gives a certain pearly tone to her skin. The young woman adopts a natural and casual attitude, looking directly at the viewer, in front of a localist landscape that reflects the love for the land, the beauty and lyricism of the everyday, what is close and known to Zuloaga. Son of the notable damascene artist Plácido Zuloaga, and nephew of Daniel Zuloaga, one of the most outstanding Spanish ceramists of his time, Ignacio Zuloaga worked as a child in his father's workshop, where he had his first contact with drawing and engraving.
