Francesco (1708) Zugno Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1708 - d. 1787

Francesco Zugno ( c. 1708–1787) was an Italian painter of the Rococo period who had a successful career in Venice.

Francesco Zugno was born in Venice in 1709 and probably died there in 1787. The Zugno were an ancient Venetian family and its members included artists such as the fifteenth century painter Giambattista Zugno. The Brescia branch of the Zugno family also includes a Zugno Francesco (1574-1621) with whom the artist who is the subject of this entry is sometimes confused.

Few details about his life are known. He trained at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture of Venice. When he entered, on the advice of his father Zugno Faustin, in the workshop of Giambattista Tiepolo around 1730, Francesco already had a solid training as a painter. As a disciple and collaborator of Tiepolo, he realized between 1730 and 1737 several paintings. Amongst others, he collaborated with Tiepolo on the frescoes for the Palazzo Labia. He received his first commission for paintings for the convent church of San Lazzaro degli Armeni in Venice.

Among his masterworks is a series of wall frescoes of figures in quadratura balconies, works that were part genre, part courtly conceit. He later completed a fresco cycle for the Villa Soderini-Berti, in Nervesa near Treviso. He was strongly influenced by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and his works. He was a founding academic of the Accademia of Venice.

He was married in 1742. The Venetian painter Alessandro Longhi, who knew him well, said Zugno was inclined to melancholy and loneliness.

Circle of Francesco Zugno,  Italian 1709-1787-  Venus and attendants;  oi

        Est: £300 - £500

Circle of Francesco Zugno,  Italian 1709-1787-  Venus and attendants;  oil on canvas, 32 x 43.5 cm.  Note:  The present work recalls that of the Venetian painter Zugno, who produced a number of mythological and Biblical scenes, often set in the foreground of an open landscape populated by isolated trees. In addition to the composition, the artist's treatment of the figures' faces is typical of Zugno and his circle, as is evident in the painting depicting the 'Finding of Moses' attributed to Zugno in the collection of the National Gallery, London [NG3542]. The present work also resembles Zugno's modello of 'The Continence of Scipio' in the São Paolo Museum of Art [MASP.00038].

        Francesco Zugno , 1709 Venice – 1787 . TWO CHARACTER HEADS.

        Est: €6,000 - €12,000

Two old men, leaning towards each other, look at each other questioningly in a moment. The frowning character heads have a great depth effect in the dark interior - the room is only defined by the cut columns. Dario Succi clearly assigns them to Francesco Zugno and dates them to around 1760. At this time, Zugno was particularly interested in the characterization of the figures, which he created with great care and cleverly used means such as the lively, silvery tones, implemented. Oil on canvas, 76x60cm.

ZWEI CHARAKTERKÖPFE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 76 x 60 cm. Unsigniert. In ornamentalem Rahmen.

Francesco taught painting and sculpture at the Venice Academy and worked in the workshop of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, later becoming his collaborator. Together they have created several paintings between 1730 and 1737. His first important commissions were the paintings for the monastery church of San Lazzaro degli Armeni in Venice. The painting depicts King Erysichthon ordering to fell a sacred oak tree (Metamorphoses, Book VIII). The woman in the middle holding the tree is probably Erysichthon's daughter Mestra, whom he sold into slavery. For scorning the gods he was afflicted at once with an insatiable hunger, and eventually gnawed his own flesh and died. (expert opinion: Dario Succi, Gorizia)

ZUGNO FRANCESCO (1709 - 1787) Madonna Enthroned with St. Cajetan, Antonio and Francesco. Oil on canvas Work exhibited at the Musei Civici Agli Eremitani, Padua, in 2012. Publications: Catalogue of the exhibition held at the Musei Civici Agli Eremitani, Padua in 2012. The work comes with a written communication by Egidio Martini, undated; as noted by Egidio Martini in his text, this altarpiece is derived from one of the most beautiful inventions of Giambattista Tiepolo, variatious sketches for which exist. Francesco Zugno replaced St. Louis of Toulouse, on the left, with the figure of St. Gaetano of Thiene; the brushstroke, modelled on a grey base, is also typical of this artist, who was one of the best disciples of Tiepolo. Martini, who associates this painting with the Holy Family, dates it to circa 1745. 89,50 x 176,00 cm
