Francesco (1702) Zuccarelli Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Bühnendekorationsmaler, Landscape painter, Etcher, Painter, b. 1702 - d. 1789

Giacomo Francesco Zuccarelli (commonly known as Francesco Zuccarelli, 15 August 1702 – 30 December 1788) RA, was an Italian artist of the late Baroque or Rococo period. He is considered to be the most important landscape painter to have emerged from his adopted city of Venice during the mid-eighteenth century, and his Arcadian views became popular throughout Europe and especially in England where he resided for two extended periods. His patronage extended to the nobility, and he often collaborated with other artists such as Antonio Visentini and Bernardo Bellotto. In 1768, Zuccarelli became a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and upon his final return to Italy, he was elected president of the Venetian Academy. In addition to his rural landscapes which frequently incorporated religious and classical themes, Zuccarelli created devotional pieces and on occasion did portraiture. Beside paintings, his varied output included etchings, drawings, and designs for tapestries as well as a set of Old Testament playing cards.

Despite the fame he experienced in his lifetime, Zuccarelli's reputation declined in the early 19th century with naturalism becoming increasingly favoured in landscapes. Turner criticized him in mild terms while confessing that his figures could be beautiful, paving the way for more severe Victorian assessments. In 1959, the art historian Michael Levey offered suggestions for why Zuccarelli held such wide contemporary appeal among the English, concluding that his best work is highly decorative. More recently, since the 1990s there has been a renewed focus on Zuccarelli among Italian scholars, who have given him prominence in several books and articles, and his paintings and drawings are regularly shown in exhibitions.

ENDYMION UND DIE MONDGÖTTIN LUNA Bleistiftzeichnung auf Papier. Blattmaß: 31,6 x 24,5 cm. Unterhalb der Darstellung betitelt „Endymione e la Luna“. Freigestellt in Passepartout, hinter Glas gerahmt. (1421436) (18)

1)Landscape with a Shepherd Family by a Well 2) Landscape with Shepherds by the River Zuccarelli is one of the most important figures among the landscape painters of mid-18th-century Venice. His time in London from 1742 to 1752 preceded his key role as one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. He maintained consistent involvement in the institution's exhibitions, which peaked in his election as president of the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia in 1771. A shepherd accompanied by cows and sheep, converses with his young wife by a well. Positioned in the foreground, the wife leans towards a child while carrying a basket and jug, likely containing food for her husband. The composition is framed by a forest in the left background and an ancient tower in the land to the right. 2) In this composition, Zuccarelli strategically arranges the figures to the right and left of the center. On the right lies a woman with her son and both facing towards the shepherd on horseback, who is depicted from behind. The painter has placed a tree stump as a center element, behind which a dog is barking at the woman and boy. Meanwhile, a river flows through the middle distance, and in the background, a village settled among hills features a prominent church tower at its center. The scene is further enriched by a group of trees on the right. Zuccarelli's deft application of a brisk, creamy painting style effectively accentuates the rococo character of the artwork. Additionally, pastoral idylls such as this one were enjoyed widespread popularity during the 18th century. However Zuccarelli's mastery of representing this genre is unparalleled in Italian painting. Certificate written by Dr. Dario Succi. 55 x 73 cm, Oil on canvas

72 cm x 92 cm. Rahmen. Oil on canvas. Signed with a small pumpkin as artist's sign for his Italian name.

Francesco Zuccarelli, Landscape with Shepherd and Peasant

    Est: €38,000 - €44,000

Certificate Dr. Federica Spadotto, Padua, 23.1.2023. This Arcadian landscape with shepherds by the Tuscan painter Francesco Zuccarelli, who was active in Venice, is characterised by pastel tones and a delicate style. The composition is clearly modelled on the works of the Venetian Marco Ricci and the Fleming Nicolaes Berchem, who also enjoyed a great reputation throughout Europe due to the popularity of printed reproductions of their works. Zuccarelli's figures in their plain attire reflect a successful synthesis between the depiction of simple peasant life and an elegant, classical atmosphere. The latter is entirely in keeping with the sophistication of 18th century Venetian fashion, which established Zuccarelli's great fame in the lagoon city and in Great Britain.

(Pitigliano 1702–1788 Florence) Travellers and other figures in a river landscape, a town beyond, oil on canvas, 105.5 x 150.5 cm, framed Provenance: acquired by the father of the present owner, 1985 In this arcadian landscape, crossed by a river, a family is depicted travelling. The father on foot, the mother and children on horseback, accompanied by other animals. A similar landscape, as well as the figurative device of travellers on horseback, can be found in several of Zuccarelli’s works, such as in the Landscape with a Woman fording a Stream on Horseback dated around 1740–44, now in the Royal Collection Trust (inv. no. RCIN 401272). The present composition is populated by recurring figures in Francesco Zuccarelli’s paintings, for example the water carrier, which is found in other of his works, including A Pastoral Landscape in Warminster (National Trust, Stourhead, inv. no. 732088). Likewise, the crouching woman with child, is another recurring motif in the painter’s production. Born in Tuscany, Francesco Zuccarelli, initially trained with Paolo Anesi in Florence and then moved to Rome. In around 1713–1714 he became a pupil of Giovanni Maria Morandi and Pietro Nelli. In 1732 Zuccarelli moved to Venice, where he increasingly concentrated on painting arcadian landscapes, which he cultivated in competition with Giuseppe Zais from Belluno, and through which he soon met public success. His landscapes are populated with figurines reminiscent of Claude Lorrain, whose works Zuccarelli had studied in Rome. As was the case with other contemporary painters active in Veneto, such as Canaletto or Bernardo Bellotto, his paintings were highly appreciated abroad where he was called upon to paint for wealthy patrons, such as Consul Joseph Smith. Zuccarelli worked extensively in England where he influenced important local painters. After five years in London and an initial return to Venice, Zuccarelli moved back to London in 1765, where he was one of the founders of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. Now wealthy and admired by the British public, he returned to Italy in 1773.
