On the back with a label from the Manuel Barbie Gallery, Barcelona This work is a split of a larger work painted around 1910 whose original title was “Cofradía de hilanderas”. With this format and title it was presented by the painter in various international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale in 1910 or the Barcelona International Biennale the following year, the last exhibition in which it appears with this title and format being the "ll XXVII Annual Exhibition International Painting” from the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh in 1928. For reasons that are unknown, Ramón himself probably divided the work into two parts, creating “El limosnero de Ondarroa” as a new autonomous work, thus presented already in 1954 at the Hispano-American Biennial of Art of Havana. As for the remaining fragment, its current whereabouts are unknown, or if it was perhaps reused to paint another work, as was the painter's usual practice. Ramón Zubiaurre ennobled the inhabitants of the rural areas depositing in it a great sensibility, of which this portrait of an old woman in the foreground leaves testimony, being drawn in the distance a twilight landscape wrapped in emerald coloured lights. Brother of Valentín de Zubiaurre, also a painter and also deaf and mute like him, he always maintained a close relationship with his brother, and in fact both began their careers with his sister Pilar, who was in charge of the sale of his paintings and the organization of numerous exhibitions, both in Spain and abroad, in the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Germany and other countries. Between 1903 and 1912 he received a scholarship from the Diputación de Vizcaya, which allowed him to devote himself fully to painting. From the beginning he will be closely linked to the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts held in Madrid, as well as to the cultural life of the Spanish capital. In fact, he studied at the Royal Academy of San Fernando, and in 1905 he finished his studies and moved to Paris to complete his training. He finally returned to Madrid, settling with his brother. In 1918 he was appointed a member of the Hispanic Society of America in New York, and in fact he remained in the United States between 1940 and 1951. He is currently represented in the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Chicago Museum, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, the Fine Arts Museums of Bilbao and Alava, the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastian and the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, among other collections.

Provenance: Acquired by the present owner from a private collection in Neguri, a district of Gecho where the great Basque bourgeoisie traditionally resided. Measurements: 75 x 95 cm: 95 x 114 cm (frame). The solemn Basque mountains are outlined in the distance, wrapped in soft blue mist, and in the foreground an old couple shelling corn, filling large wicker baskets. Following a ritual they have been doing for almost a century, their hands act on their own while their thoughts fly back to the past. This is expressed in their wiry, nostalgic faces, in those mouths stuck in the rictus of a smile, as well as in the twinkle in their small eyes. Behind them, wide, sown fields spread out in front of a large farmhouse with a white façade. Behind them, other houses and small huts lead towards the village, along a winding road that disappears at the height of a church. This is a type of composition that Ramón de Zubiaurre repeatedly favoured, on this occasion achieving a painting of great emotional intensity: the panoramic landscape of a region of the Basque Country, welcoming its most faithful inhabitants into its bosom, thus cradling them in their native land. The intense chromatic contrast, the tonal shifts of the amber dawn and the emphasis on drawing are characteristic of this artist, a renovator (together with his brother Valentín) of Spanish regionalism. This work is part of the boom in regionalism in Spain in the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. An art with a Romantic, costumbrista heritage and a realistic and meticulous style was developed, which focused on depicting subjects, themes and characters that reflected a new sense of folklore. In this context, the painters sought to reflect the types and customs of their own land, which made it different and unique, thus vindicating their own roots and, above all, the traditions and ways of dressing and behaving that were threatened by the notable growth of urban areas and the imposition of new fashions brought in from outside. Art, fundamentally in its pictorial aspect, thus became, in a certain way, a vehicle of expression capable of making regional peculiarities known to the rest of the nation. The brother of Valentín de Zubiaurre, also a painter and a deaf-mute like himself, Ramón de Zubiaurre always maintained a close relationship with his brother, and in fact both began their careers under the guidance of his sister Pilar, who was in charge of selling his paintings and organising numerous exhibitions, both in Spain and abroad, in the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Germany and other countries. Between 1903 and 1912 he was awarded a scholarship by the Diputación de Vizcaya, which enabled him to devote himself fully to painting. From the outset he was closely linked to the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts held in Madrid, as well as to the cultural life of the Spanish capital. This publication indicates that Ramón Zubiaurre exhibited the work at the Sala Toisón in Madrid, thus fulfilling the wish to be judged by his peers at the age of 75. - "Basque painters and sculptors of yesterday, today and tomorrow", p. 273. Provenance: Formerly Luis Benito del Valle collection (Bilbao). Measurements: 68 x 63 cm; 95 x 110 cm (frame). Basque traditions were a recurring theme in the production of Ramón de Zubiaurre, who sought to document the ethnographic values of his region, as was the practice of regionalist painters in the rest of Spain at the time. In the exceptional canvas in question, Zubiaurre immortalizes a group of village women playing a lively game of julep. In spite of the apparent banality of the theme represented, Zubiaurre recreates an interesting link between all the characters that, far from seeming casual, becomes a declaration of intentions. And the fact is that the game is not limited to the cards resting on the table, or to those that the women with white cloths on their heads play between their hands, but, behind them, there are two other female figures, accomplices in the game. This time with black cloths, both women observe the cards of the players. To the right of the composition, standing to control all the movements, a villager indicates to her ally in front of her to watch her movements, while she looks back at her. Behind her, another villager in black watches the play. The defiant gaze of the central figure, who has put on her glasses so as not to lose any detail, and the figure who at that precise moment throws her card, complete a fascinating game that, beyond the cards, is extrapolated to reality. The narrative of the scene is reinforced by the double still life exercise on the right of the painting. Behind this eloquent genre scene, we see an imposing landscape dotted with a village and a hamlet, worked with a very varied palette in which green tones predominate, very elaborate and varied. The painter plays with the intensity and contrasts of light to construct the space, and attenuates the colors in the undulating mountains in the background, reflecting the humid atmosphere that dominates the landscape.
