Christian Gottfried Zschoch (1775 Dresdenunkn. - 1833 ): Portrait of King Charles XII, Sweden (1682 Stockholm - 1718 Fredrikshald), c. 1800, Stipple engraving Technique: Stipple engraving on Paper Date: c. 1800 Description: Engraving by C. G. Zschoch, signed and inscribed below the image: "Zschoch sc. // Carl XII Charles XII". Carl XII is portrayed as a young man. His beautifully curved mouth and large eyes dominate the face. He is wearing a dark uniform jacket. The picture is engraved as an oval and appears particularly delicate without a border. Charles XII (1682 - 1718) was King of Sweden from the age of fifteen until his death in 1718. Christian Gottfried Zschoch (1775 - 1833) was a German engraver. Person: King Karl XII., Sweden (1682 Stockholm - 1718 Fredrikshald) King of Sweden and Duke of Bremen and Verden from 1697 to 1718. Almost throughout his reign, he led his country through the Great Northern War, in which he himself acted as commander and won significant victories for several years. However, an unsuccessful Russian campaign in 1708/1709 put his country on the defensive. In 1718 he fell in Norway at the siege of Frederikshald. With Charles XII, Sweden's position as a great power came to an end, as did the struggle for control of the Baltic Sea, the so-called Dominium maris Baltici, which had been going on since 1611. Russia replaced Sweden as a great power after the Nordic War. Keywords: 19th century, Figurative, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 9,5 cm x 7,0 cm (3,7 x 2,8 in), Depiction: 6,0 cm x 5,0 cm (2,4 x 2 in)
