She grew up in Fresno and quickly showed an interest in and aptitude for artistic expression. In 1908, she moved to Paris to further her education in the arts. She attended the Academie de la Palette, where the influence of Fauvism was prevalent. Freed from the constraints of traditional and academic precepts, she developed a more personal aesthetic. In Paris, she frequented the Modernists populating the Parisian cafes at the time, including Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, or Henri Matisse. In 1910-1911, Zorach visited far-flung places in Asia, North Africa, and Hawaii before returning to California in 1912 and settling in the lower Sierra Nevada mountains. While this new setting offered the artist unparalleled inspiration, she finally relocated to New York City, where she married William Zorach, whom she had previously met in Paris. The two developed an unwavering artistic collaboration, for example exhibiting together at the Armory Show in 1913. Notwithstanding the life-long partnership with her husband, Marguerite remained creatively independent, embracing feminist agendas and innovative forms and media, notably experimenting with textiles. She was resolutely a Modernist artist, subscribing to the notion that fine art and craft weren't intrinsically opposed and, in fact, meshed well together. She also served as the President of the Modernist New York Society of Women Artists. During her lifetime and career, Marguerite Thompson Zorach wasn't quite afforded the widespread critical recognition that she deserved. It wasn't until after her death in 1968 that her work came under more astute scrutiny, revealing its role as an original and significant catalyst behind American Modernism, and not merely an instance of it.

      WILLIAM ZORACH The Hog Slaughter.

      Est: $1,500 - $2,500

WILLIAM ZORACH The Hog Slaughter. Watercolor and pencil on paper, 1917. 280x219 mm; 11 1/4x8 3/4 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right recto. Provenance: Private collection, Chicago. Marguerite Thomas Zorach (1887-1968) and her husband William (1887-1966) are renowned for their innovation during the rise of American modernism, embodied by their unique blend of Cubism and Fauvism as well as the scope of their varied careers. Marguerite was an early exponent of modernism in America, born in California into a well-to-do family. She exhibited an interest in art at an early age, and studied at Stanford University before traveling to Paris with her aunt, where she was introduced to Gertrude Stein and exposed to the work of Henri Matisse. There she discovered her affinity for the color palette of the Fauves. Marguerite studied for a period of time at the conservative Académie de la Grande Chaumière before attending the progressive art school La Palette, where she met her future husband, William. Their marriage, in 1912, began a strong companionship in which the two artists consistently inspired, influenced and shaped each another's artistic lives. Born in 1887 in Lithuania, William Zorach immigrated to Cleveland, with his family at age four. He worked as both a sculptor and watercolorist at the vanguard of American modernism, after briefly studying in Paris in the early 1910s. While Zorach initially practiced painting, his interests in sculpture, which took root in 1917, soon eclipsed all other media. By the 1930s, Zorach was regarded as one of America's premier sculptors and was honored with multiple commissions and exhibitions including shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.

      Est: $600 - $800

Marguerite Thompson Zorach California, Maine, New York, (1887-1968) Self Portrait pencil on paper Titled lower left, signed and inscribed lower right. Biography from the Archives of askART: A native of Fresno, California, Marguerite Zorach arrived in Paris in the fall of 1908, an experience that placed her in the first generation of American painters to be influenced by and to espouse the Fauves, artists whose work was based on color and rhythm. She studied at the progressive school, La Palette, and shortly after met fellow student, William Zorach, a Lithuanian born lithographer from Cleveland. They returned to the United States and married in 1912, and then worked together closely, especially as painters in oil. Many critics regard her early years as a painter, 1908-1920, as her most productive when she was experimenting with both Fauvism and Cubism and actively promoting the work of these painters in America. She was not fully recognized for her role as a modern American artist until 1970, two years after she died, when some of her early canvases were rediscovered. She had destroyed many of them, having changed her medium after the birth of her children to work in brilliantly colored wools rather than oils to express her love of color. In her large-scale needleworks, she explored wide ranges of color and a variety of stitches. In fact, her needlework skills were a key factor in the Marguerite and William and their two children having some stability during the Depression of the 1930s. Because of an arrangement made by their New York dealer, Edith Halpert, Marguerite had a commission for a tapestry with Abby Rockefeller for the family home at Seal Harbor, Maine. The Zorach family visited the Rockefellers, and Marguerite was then given a commission for a tapestry that earned her $18,000.00, "a sum that allowed the Zorachs to continue their work as artists and also provided for their two young children." (Pollock, 129) She and her husband both exhibited in the 1913 Armory Show in New York, and she served as Director of the Society of Independent Artists and the first President of the New York Society of Women Artists. A brilliant student, she was one of the first women admitted to Stanford University in 1908. Shortly after her enrollment, she was lured to Paris by an aunt who was living there. She studied art for four years in Paris and, while there, met her future husband William Zorach. Returning to Fresno in 1912, she camped with her family in the Sierra Madre and did a series of paintings of that area. The following year, she returned to NYC, married Zorach, and lived in Brooklyn for her remaining years. A pioneer in modern art, she was one of the few young artists to introduce Fauvist and Cubist styles to the U.S. between 1910-20. The Zorachs made another trip to Yosemite in 1920. Est: $25,000 - $40,000

Marguerite Zorach (American, 1887-1968) Tulips and Lilacs Signed 'MARGUERITE ZORACH' bottom right, oil on canvas 26 1/8 x 20 1/8 in. (66.4 x 51.1cm) Executed in 1938. Provenance Christie's, New York, sale of September 13, 1995, lot 122. (Presumably) acquired directly from the above sale. Kraushaar Galleries, New York, New York. Acquired directly from the above in 1997. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold and Sandy Rifkin, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Note We wish to thank Mr. Jonathan Zorach, the Artist's grandson, for confirming the authenticity of the present work, and for his assistance in cataloguing the Lot. Marguerite Zorach, née Thompson, grew up in Fresno, California. After graduating from Stanford University, she embarked on a four-year trip to Paris, where she was introduced to avant-garde movements, and became particularly enthralled by French Fauvism, and Cubism. While on the old continent, the artist travelled frequently. She also journeyed to the Near East and Asia, thus gaining insight into global cultures and design. In Paris, she studied and exhibited her work. It is also there that she met her husband, William Zorach. In 1912 the married couple returned to the United States and settled in New York City's Greenwich Village, and later in Brooklyn. In 1913, she exhibited at the Armory Show in New York alongside her husband, and started to count among the new dominating voices of American Modern Art. While she mostly painted landscapes and is known for her ambitious embroideries, Marguerite Zorach also produced a number of still lifes which she arranged herself, extracting flowers from her garden to arrange them in her home interior. The present work features several lilacs and tulip stems arranged in the family faience pitcher, which can be seen in other compositions, holding different bouquets depending on the seasons. The pot sits straight on a tabletop, solidly flanked by a book as well as a jar. Yet, the surrounding vanishing lines suggest the table is slightly tilting towards us, as if about to flip. This extraordinary movement, paired with the elegant, free arabesques of some of the flower stems, is indicative of the deep influence Fauvist Henri Matisse, and Cubist Pablo Picasso held on the artist. In a flattened space, the still life comes to life: it jiggles and moves without any human intervention and with minimal brushwork. The painting is a joyful whirlwind of color, pattern and movement: the eye goes back and forth between the weighted jar, the sinuous stems, the pounding background, the curled edges of the leaves, the floating book, and the over-hanging flower buds. Through her love of color and shapes, Zorach here offers an efficient and organic synthesis of her European heritage and her own visual language and sensibility. The unlined canvas in excellent original condition with no sign of inpainting as seen under UV light. With a minuscule flake at upper right corner, hidden by the cast shadow of the frame. An important painter and textile artist, Marguerite Zorach was one of a small group of avant-garde artists and writers who advanced the cause of modernism in New York City during the early twentieth century. Inspired by European Fauvism and Cubism, Zorach played a vital role in introducing Post-Impressionist aesthetics into the United States. Zorach was born in Santa Rosa, California, and raised in Fresno. Although she later had the opportunity to attend Stanford University, she decided to study painting in France instead. Shortly after arriving in Paris in the fall of 1908, Zorach visited the Salon d'Automne, where she saw and was impressed by the work of vanguard painters such as Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, and Albert Marquet. After a brief period of study at the conservative Ecole de la Grand Chaumiere, Zorach enrolled at classes at La Palette. Viewed as one of the more progressive art schools of the day, La Palette was managed by John Duncan Fergusson, an expatriate Scotsman described as "chef d'ecole of a group in Paris who called themselves Post-Impressionists." Zorach soon began to experiment with the bold, expressive color, dark contour lines, and simplified forms associated with the Fauvist style. During her three years in Paris, she made frequent visits to the leading commercial galleries and to the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne, where she exhibited her work in 1911. Through a family connection, she also came into contact with Gertrude Stein, who invited the young painter to attend several of her soirees. It was through Stein that Zorach met Pablo Picasso, as well as the noted sculptor Ossip Zadkine. Zorach returned to California in the spring of 1912, following a seven-month trip that took her to Egypt, Palestine, India, China, and Japan. She spent the following summer working in the Sierra Nevada mountains, creating some of the most striking paintings of her career. These, and much of her Parisian work, were displayed in Zorach's first solo exhibition, held in Los Angeles in October 1912. Zorach then moved to New York City; on December 24 she married William Zorach, a promising sculptor she had met in Paris at La Palette. Along with her husband, one of the first American sculptors to work with the direct carving technique, Zorach taught at the Modem Art School in Manhattan. Her paintings were included in many important modernist exhibitions, including the Armory Show (1913) and the Forum Exhibition (1916). Zorach's work was also displayed at the Society of Independent Artists and the People's Art Guild, as well as at the Daniel Gallery and the Montross Gallery. In 1925, she served as the first president of the newly established New York Society of Women Artists. The Zorachs also lived and worked in Cornish, New Hampshire, Georgetown Island, Maine, and Provincetown, Massachusetts. A landscape specialist, Zorach's paintings were deeply inspired by her love of nature. She continued to employ a Fauvist style until around 1914, when she began to incorporate Cubist forms into her work. Zorach was also active as a textile artist, employing the same vivid color and abstract forms in her batiks and tapestries as she had in her paintings. After 1920, she adopted a more representational approach in both her paintings and drawings. Zorach had a distinctive and singular approach to landscape painting: She treated forms within her compositions in both the faceted fashion typical of analytical Cubism, and al

MARGUERITE ZORACH View of Wethersfield Cove, Connecticut. Lithograph with hand coloring in watercolor, 1929. 292x440 mm; 11 1/2x17 1/2 inches, full margins. Edition of 30. Signed, dated and numbered 30/10 in pencil, lower right. A very good impression of this extremely scarce, early lithograph. Born in 1887 in Lithuania, William Zorach immigrated to Cleveland, with his family at age 4. He worked as both a sculptor and watercolorist at the vanguard of American modernism, after briefly studying in Paris in the early 1910s. While Zorach initially practiced painting, his interests in sculpture, which took root in 1917, soon eclipsed all other media. By the 1930s, Zorach was regarded as one of America's premier sculptors and was honored with multiple commissions and exhibitions including shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
