        Dec. 08, 2022

        LADISLAV ZÍVR 1909 - 1980 - SPECTRE

        Est: -

Ladislav Zívr experimented with abstraction, studied nature and its processes, geometry and its laws. This was reflected in the enrichment of the sculptures with contrasting and hybrid shapes. The moulage technique represents his own innovation, when he incorporated original natural shapes into liquid plaster. The poetics and tension of Zívr's work lies in the transcendental dimension and touches the building blocks of life, bodies and nature. The surrealistic composition of Spectre is a modern reference to the theme of vanitas and matter subject to external realities. In the list of Zívr's works in the monograph published by the Kant publishing house in 2013, Přízrak is numbered 487. Technique: Polychrome plaster, mullage, Signed: Lower right "Zívr 1976"

        LADISLAV ZÍVR 1909 - 1980 - FUNERAL HORSES

        Est: -

Throughout his life, Ladislav Zívr strived for simplicity and the fullness of shapes - an ideal he brought from his family's pottery tradition. In his work of loose, relief, and portrait sculptures he went through several periods of development - late cubism, surrealism, gutfreund civilism, and symbolically tuned spiritualism. Zívr is characterized by a fascination with death and associated with organic, directly biological forms. Experimenting with the material closest to his heart - clay - he even invented his own technique of moulage (a combination of natural materials and liquid plaster). The offered sculpture is one of the author's key works from the period of World War II when the motif of the horse appears in a well-known sculpture created between 1943/44 under the title Head of the Funeral Horse. The work on offer is a sketch for such a motif when spirituality and melancholy were ubiquitous themes drawn from the artworks of Jan Zrzavý and the poetry of Otokar Březina. Published in the author's monograph Typlt, Jaromír. Ladislav Zívr. Kant, 2013, p. 128, in the list of works under number 74. Signed: Signed and dated

        LADISLAV ZÍVR 1909 - 1980 - SHEDDING SNAKE

        Est: -

Ladislav Zívr had a silent dispute with Marxist censors, who persistently oversaw the art form and promoted their own version of historical "progress." He found inspiration in nature and tried his best to find his own form of expression that would not repeat itself. He relied on the resistance of the incompleteness of form and, on the contrary, progressed to smoothness and purity. "I hate a form other than fixed (planed)!" Inspired by natural symmetry and symbiosis of shapes, he tried to dramatize the original perception to the point of mild concern. The main element of the work from this period, as well as the work Shedding Snake, is the basic will of life after birth and growth. He was fascinated by the shapes of fruits, germs and protective layers. His work led him to know the laws of life, birth and indomitability. "When watching my things, the Polish painter Lenica talked about eroticism. It's supposed to be in art, and he said that I have it there. The shapes of nature are erotic." Published by: Ladislav Zívr, Jaromír Typlt, Kant, 2013, in the list of works No. 419. Technique: Polychrome fired clay, Signed: Signed below "Zívr 1972"

        SIREN

        Est: -

As PhDr. Jaromír Typlt, the author of a definitive monograph about Zívr, explains, “Siren is an entirely unique work in sculptor Ladislav Zívr’s oeuvre in several respects. The artist, who until that time had tended to focus on smaller formats in fired clay and plaster, decided here to work a walnut trunk with a final height of 236 cm – of his works, only one of two sandstone sculptures he made for the 1966 sculpture symposium in Hořice surpassed this height. Zívr had prepared returning to wood as a base material since the late 1950s – ‘I want to work in wood, if I live in the forest’ (newspaper 31 August 1959). When in 1964, after moving to a new, larger studio in Ždírce/Stará Paka, he picked out a walnut trunk to sculpt, his process returned to when he had been conducting surrealist experiments with various materials here he added a hemp rope and metal parts to the wood. With its height, Siren (Zívr had originally also considered the title Birdcall) was to provide a new scale for Zívr’s next plaster and clay sculptures. Working a finished trunk was also a different experience than modelling in clay: ‘While working I pay attention to the shapes defined by the wood and branches, because when I work with clay I get inspired by randomly arising shapes. A sense for art defines what to chop off, curve, flatten, give proportions. Subconsciously and consciously I get everything in there that I want to have. The completed work then tells what life experiences made it in there. How much emotion and poetry. When he saw my things, the Polish painter Lenica spoke of eroticism. That should be in art, and apparently I’ve got it in there. Nature’s shapes are erotic.” (26 January 1965). The work was first reproduced in the journal Výtvarné práci 1965/20 and it has been presented at Zívr’s solo exhibition in Hradec Králové in 1965 and at a joint exhibition of František Gross, Ladislav Zívr and Miroslav Hák in Kramář Gallery, Prague (1967). In recent years it was on long-term loan at the National Gallery in Prague. In the catalogue raisonné of Zívr’s sculptures in the monograph published by Kant in 2013, Siréna is listed under no. 297 and is reproduced on page 214.”

      • NUDE SEATED IN AN ARMCHAIR

        NUDE SEATED IN AN ARMCHAIR

        Est: -

From the time he was a boy Ladislav Zívr spent his free time in his father’s pottery workshop, and thus it should come as no surprise that fired clay went on to become his favorite medium. Suddenly arising from the dream-like world of his Surrealist period are specific figures and sculpted portraits that do not at all fit in with Surrealism. The figures do not form an unsettling drama| they merely are themselves. Such is the case for the nude seated in an armchair. She does not at all conceal her exposed female curves and looks straight ahead, an air of condescension on her face. This is not a stylized nude perfected by the artist with a glimmer of pathos, but rather a common city woman who is more concerned about everyday problems. Nevertheless, there is something in her gaze that is not present, something that she does not reveal. This blend of direct declared presence and a sort of mysterious non-presence is a common feature in Zívr’s realistic sculptures. The 1930s brought a temporary departure from his dreamlike Surrealistic experimental poetry towards permanence and continuity. In 1927–1928 Ladislav Zívr attended the State Technical School of Ceramics in Bechyně and the School of Applied Arts in Prague in 1928–1931. He brought sculpture to the family tradition of pottery, and he worked with clay with focus and forethought. He was strongly influenced by the work of Otto Gutfreund, which left imprints of Social Civilism and Cubism in his work. In his expression be believed in simple, full forms| before the mid-1930s Zívr was a member of the youngest generation of Prague Surrealists and he himself called his work “poetry making”. He started to apply the Surrealist aesthetic of random encounters in his work, combining materials and inventing the experimental art technique of moulage. He was a member of Group 42 in 1942–1948. Publ.: Jaromír Typlt: Ladislav Zívr, 2013, cat. 43. Fired clay.
