Oil on canvas Signed. Doris Clare Zinkeisen (British, 1897-1991) Born in Clynder House in Rosneath, Argyll, Scotland, Zinkeisen attended the Harrow School of Art for four years. During the 1920s and '30s, she shared a studio with her sister in London, where she started her career as a commercial artist, theatrical designer, and painter. During World War II, she joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade and worked as a nurse in London. Following the liberation of Europe in 1945, she was commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee. After the war she continued to work in London, producing theatrical designs and occasionally exhibiting her paintings.

Doris Clare Zinkeisen (Scottish, 1898-1991). Oil on canvas portrait painting of a woman in a elegantly draped pink gown. Signed along the lower right. Provenance: From the Estate of Horst Rechelbacher, Osceola, Wisconsin. Horst Rechelbacher, the founder of Aveda and Intelligent Nutrients, was a pioneer in the field of safe and eco-friendly cosmetics. The same curiosity that led him to explore ways to improve the beauty industry led him to travel the world, collecting rare and beautiful objects as he went. The prolific artist and painter Doris Clare Zinkeisen was born in Scotland in 1898. In 1909, Zinkeisen enrolled at the Harrow School of Art. Upon graduation, the gifted artist won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools in London. Early in her career, she met the esteemed actor and theater manager Nigel Playfair, leading to her interest in this sphere of the arts. Zinkeisen created portraits of several actors, and she designed the scenery and costumes for Noel Coward's musical, "On with the Dance." In addition to her portrait paintings, her artwork often depicts the famous parks of London and Paris. Zinkeisen illustrated several commercial posters for railways and the London Underground. She was famously known for painting the murals on the luxury ocean liner, the RMS Queen Mary.
