ZHOU PEICHUN A COLLECTION OF FORTY-NINE WATERCOLOUR DRAWINGS Late Qing Dynasty, active circa 1880-1910 晚清 周培春 北京市井人物圖 設色紙本 四十八頁 Comprising forty nine loose watercolours on paper, ink and colour on paper, depicting various characters with captions that one could meet on the streets of the capital, Beijing. DIMENSIONS (49) _ PROVENANCE: English Private Collection, London 來源: 倫敦私人收藏 - NOTE: Zhou Peichun was active and painted between 1880 and 1910 from his studio in Beijing. He is known for his distinctive contributions to the genre of traditional Chinese painting, particularly in the realm of folk art. His works are characterised by their vivid depictions of daily life and folk customs during the late Qing Dynasty. His works often focus on scenes from everyday life, capturing the vibrancy and diversity of Chinese culture during his time, catering mostly to Western costumers. His use of bright colours, intricate details, and lively compositions makes his work stand out. Zhou had a unique ability to portray the nuances of social interactions, festivals, and the routines of ordinary people, making his art a valuable cultural record. Zhou's technique was rooted in traditional Chinese painting methods, utilising ink and colour on paper or silk. However, his approach incorporated elements that appealed to a broader audience, blending classical techniques with a more accessible, illustrative style. This made his work particularly popular among the general populace, who could see their own lives and surroundings reflected in his art. His paintings provide an important glimpse into the social fabric of late 19th and early 20th century China, preserving a visual history of the customs and lifestyles of that era. Similar watercolours and albums by Zhou Peichun can be found in various collections, including: the Victoria and Albert Museum, collection no. D.1572-1900; The Philadelphia Museum of Art, colleciton no. 1967-173-2; The British Museum, collection no. 1938,1210,0.7; The Metropolitan Museum, collection no. 57.109a–q.
