Painted over more than a decade, this career-defining series was inspired by the artist's pet dog, a German shepherd named Heigen. The passionate and emotional manner in which the dog is portrayed, along with the vivid colours utilized, represent the influence of German neo-impressionism on Zhou's work, whilst the fluidity and confidence of strokes are typical of Chinese ink and brush work. Zhou manages to combine these two styles to form a unique artistic aesthetic which he employs to great effect while depicting Heigen in virtually every pose imaginable. Throughout the series, the dog portrays a range of emotions that seem to transcend the animal kingdom and apply equally to humans. It has therefore been suggested that these emotions are in fact projections of the artist's own psychological state and that Heigen represents a symbolic self-portrait for the artist. It has been described as "sculpture on canvas". The art critic Lu Peng says in "Narrating the Green Dog", "His dog was a big responsibility in the artist's life more so than human being. A dog as a companion has become an unconscious desire of many people living in cities and urban areas as they have become divorced and separated from nature. The loyalty and dependability of a dog is a comfort to people, and adds a depth of meaning, bringing color and feeling to an otherwise dull and meaningless life." Taking a more expressionist viewpoint, Zhou placed the big green dog in the visual center of his canvases. The silhouette of the green dog against a huge white backdrop, the luxuriant texture of the paintwork and the heightened emotional displays of the dog, leave a deep impression on the viewer.

黑根 Heigen Signed lower right Zhou Chunya in Chinese and dated 1995 簽名右下：1995 周春芽 1994年朋友送給畫家周春芽一隻叫做「黑根」的德國牧羊犬，狗與人越熟悉，彼此彷佛都能心領神會，默契十足。周春芽記憶與黑根相處的點滴‥「牠小時候與我同睡一床，一起吃飯散步。我畫畫時，它在一旁注視我。我想，與其畫那些距離遠的東西，還不如畫身邊的事物。於是，黑根成為我畫中的主角。」黑根很快成為周春芽的模特兒，是他最鍾愛的繪畫主題之一。用黑色畫的黑根，更像是書寫畫家的一篇生活日記。黑根的稟性讓周春芽心情愉悅，幾幅命名為《平頂上玩耍的黑根》、《跑動的黑根》和《站立的黑根》等畫作，就表明畫家與愛犬的情感互動。1995年創作的《黑根》，油畫筆觸如書畫中枯枝山石的皴法，承接了周春芽1990年代在山石與花卉題材的探索。散開的筆鋒皴擦、拖曳，交替著順筆、逆鋒、側鋒，使整幅畫面生氣勃勃，呈現出藝術家心境上的回歸—輕鬆愉快，自然樸實的心路歷程。 A friend sent Zhou Chunya a German shepherd dog named Heigen as a gift in 1994. The more familiar it became with people, the more understanding it had of people. It seemed that they can understand each other even without saying anything at all. Zhou Chunya recalled some memories of when Heigen and he were together, “When it was a little dog, it slept, walked and had meals together with me. He stayed by my side watching me when I painted. So I would rather paint him that was near me than other things that were far away. So Heigen became the leading actor of my paintings.” And soon Heigen became a model for him and one of his beloved painting subjects. The black painting of Heigen was more like a diary that showed the artist’s real life. Heigen’s natural disposition made him very happy. Paintings called Heigen Played on the Flat Top, Running Heigen, Standing Heigen and so on showed the emotional connections between the artist and his beloved dog. Heigen was painted in 1995. The style of painting, which carried on from Zhou Chunya’s exploration of rock and flower subjects in 1990s, was just like the textural stroke of wood and rocks in painting and calligraphy. The scattered strokes are dragging, wrinkling and rubbing, with brush in sequence inverse, and aside, and make the whole painting filled with energy. It shows a return of the artist’s mood - an easy and natural journey of the heart filled with pleasure and simplicity.
