Chinese Cuisine: After dinner Signed in Chinese and dated 2009.10 l.l. Oil on canvas, 80 x 100.1 cm Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist N.B.: The paintings by Zhang Jianjun do not provide a commentary on consumption, but point to the relevance of the events after the meal, the messy scene following dinner when one lingers after the meal: a universal phenomenon. The number of empty plates, bottles and chairs create the melody of the evening for the artist. While admiring the large scale works one can overhear the chatter, tinkling glasses and laughing people. Although the depicted objects exemplify various social classes, they exhibit the basis of life, the foundation of human nature: being together.

Big Fatty Signed and dated 2006 l.r. Oil on canvas, 180.3 x 160.1 cm N.B.: Jianjun intends his 'fatties' to illustrate what the consumer society has brought humanity; overconsumption and material possessions take centre stage. The Chinese fatties, who have suddenly lost their friendly character and lose themselves in vulgar behaviour, form the centre of his works. These fleshy, pink figures have lost their sincerity and human smiles. Due to overconsumption their bodies have transformed in to bloated bodies. They lack restraint: only consumption keeps them going.
