    Est: €1,500 - €3,000

ZHANG DAWO (B.1943): ‘OUTBURST’ SERIES 2022, DATED 2000 Published & Exhibited: Michael Goedhuis & Jason C. Kuo, Chinese Ink Painting Now, New York/Hong Kong, 2010, page 144. China. Ink on paper. The abstract ‘action’ painting executed in expressive and bold splashes of varying depth and intensity, reminiscent of a rocky landscape. Inscriptions: Lower right, four seals of the artist. Dimensions: Image 180 x 96.5 cm, Size incl. frame 203 x 120 cm. Mounted on canvas and framed behind glass. (2) Zhang Dawo (b. 1943) was born in Chengu Shanxi province near Beijing and received a systematic calligraphy training during his early years. His grandfather was the first president of the National Palace Museum Beijing and a famous archeologist and his father, Zhang Wanli, was a linguist, translator and calligrapher. Zhang studied calligraphy under Li Henian and Wu Yuru, which built a solid technical platform for his later development. After the cultural revolution, he returned to Beijing to teach calligraphy. A few years later, he left for Tasmania, where he got inspired by the rugged landscape and incorporated it into his later artworks. Works of Zhang were included in the pioneering exhibition of calligraphy organized by Gordon Barrass at the British Museum in 2002. Condition: Excellent condition with minimal wear. Provenance: - Goedhuis Contemporary, New York, United States, 2010. - The Origo Collection, acquired from the above. - Sotheby’s Hong Kong, The Origo Collection – Contemporary Ink Art, 3 April 2016, lot 536, estimate HKD 200,000 or approx. EUR 27,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing) - A private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above in an after-sale transaction. Michael Goedhuis trained as an economist, graduating with an MBA from the Courtauld Institute in Art History. He started a successful career in investment banking in New York and London, only to leave it in 1975 to pursue his passion for art. He joined Jacob Rothschild’s Colnaghi Oriental Gallery specializing in Persian, Mughal, and Islamic art. It was here that he published a catalog focused entirely on the subject of post-archaic East Asian bronzes, a first in the field, authored by Ulrich Hausmann in 1989. Major collections were curated and sold by Mr. Goedhuis to numerous institutions including The Rothschild Collection to the Shahbanu of Iran, and the Vever Collection to the Smithsonian Institution. He subsequently expanded his activities to India, Japan, and China, concentrating on important antiquities. Today, Mr. Goedhuis continues to exhibit around the world, including in New York and Maastricht. The Origo Collection was a private foundation based in New York and Switzerland, assembling a pioneering and visionary collection of Chinese contemporary art. Started in the early 2000s, the collection comprised modern ink paintings which were often monumental in scale and always intellectually daring in approach, representing more than three decades of artistic innovation, and capturing the full range and evolution of styles of ink art practices from the late 20th century onwards. In 2016, Sotheby’s Hong Kong sold the collection over two high-profile auctions in the very first single-owner sale of Chinese contemporary ink art. Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Rongbaozhai Auction, Shanghai, 9 May 2014, lot 853 Price: CNY 600,000 or approx. May. 14, 2024

    ZHANG DAWO (b.1943), OUT-BURST, SERIES 2022, 2000

    Est: £800 - £1,200

ink on xuan paper, 96.5 by 180.3cm Provenance: The Origo Collection. Michael Goedhuis Published, Illustrated and Exhibited: Jason C Kuo, Chinese Ink Painting Now, New York, 2010, p.144, where the author notes that Zhang Dawoo was born in Beijing in 1943, and has been actively involved in the modern calligraphy movement. Coming from a cultivated family, Zhang had an unhappy childhood as his parents separated when he was three. In his early teens, Zhang lived in Tianjin with his father, who was a professor of English at Nankai University. During this period, Zhang studied with two master calligraphers, Li Henian and Wu Yuru, which built a solid technical platform for his later development. From 1963 to 1979, Zhang lived in the northeast of China, and the wild landscape he saw there greatly increased his appreciation of art stimulated by nature. After the Cultural Revolution, Zhang returned to Beijing in 1979; he began teaching calligraphy, and in the mid-1980s trying novel effects. In 1992 he set off for Tasmania, where his innovative calligraphic experiments developed. Since then Zhang Dawo has lived and worked in both Beijing and Australia. This led to his work being included in the pioneering exhibition of calligraphy organized by Gordon Barrass at the British Museum in 2002. The rugged landscape in Tasmania has become an endless inspiration for Zhang’s later works, in which he continues to explore the spatial arrangements and chromatic possibilities of Chinese calligraphy, attempting to render it relevant to modern viewers, wherever they’re from.

His artistic roots lie in the tradition of Jin-Shi, a 4,000 year-old practice in which symbols were engraved and etched in stone. Having immersed himself in classical tradition in his youth, Zhang Dawo now toys with the spatial arrangements and chromatic possibilities of Chinese calligraphy, making it relevant to modern viewers, both Chinese and otherwise.  Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
