        AK 47 N.99

Oil on Canvas. Zhang Dali's AK-47 portraits depict the migrant workers who have been drawn from rural communities to the cities in search of work and higher wages. Often poor and uneducated, this underclass are an easy target for discrimination and oppression and, with this series, Zhang Dali highlights the struggle of those who contribute to the modernisation process yet are exploited along the way. The AK-47 tag is symbolic of the violence that the communist state inflicts upon the individual and is used as a motif in many of his art works.
