Dating from 2009, the present painting by Canran Zahng (born 1979) shows his characteristic loose brushwork presented with a combination of fresh colors and grisaille. A number of Chinese and German statesmen determine the foreground of the painting, executed mainly in black and white. Among them is depicted the enthroned General Li Hongzhang (1823-1901) in the center, who was named the Eastern Bismarck due to his close relations with Germany, two of his sons. The representation is based on an original photograph of a European travel made by Li Hongzhang with his two sons in 1896. Behind the architectural background opens a blue, cloudy sky, crossed by two aircrafts operated by Lufthansa and Air China. Providing an exciting contrast, Zhang succeeded in combining images from the history of China with the modern era of the country, underlined by the use of different color schemes. Last but not least, Zhang deals here with the rapid social upheaval that has taken place in China. The painting is signed in Chinese and dated 2009 lower right.
