Zewy studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under August Eisenmenger and at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich, but was not enrolled there. After studying, Zewy returned to Vienna and concentrated on genre painting. He also illustrated books. He was friends with the painters Isidor Kaufmann, Josef Gisela and Johann Hamza. Zewy's circle of friends also included the illustrator and cartoonist Karl Elleder and the film director Fritz Lang. Zewy received many commissions from the Viennese art dealer Friedrich Schwarz. Zewy regularly exhibited at the exhibitions at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Many of his paintings appeared in the “Gartenlaube” and on postcards. On April 24, 1925, Zewy was awarded the title of “Citizen of the City of Vienna”.
