He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under the tuition of the leading sculptor of neo-Baroque monuments Kaspar von Zumbusch. After relocating to Paris, where he settled for nearly two decades, Zeitlin continued his education at the Academie des Beaux-Arts alongside with Ernest Henri Dubois and Laurent Marqueste. The artist actively exhibited in Paris and Europe between 1900 and 1914. Alexander Zeitlin moved to New York in 1915, where he successfully worked on numerous commissions, mostly portraying his prominent contemporaries, such as Albert Einstein, Efrem Zimbalist, Israel Zangwill, Emile Zola and many others. In 1929 he received a medal from the American Federation of Labor for his outstanding work on a memorial for Samuel Gompers. The National Portrait Gallery in London acquired a cast of his bust of Algernon Graves.
