  • Antonio Zatta Engraved Map, Carta Geografica del Canada nell America Settentrionale
    Feb. 01, 2025

Antonio Zatta Engraved Map, Carta Geografica del Canada nell America Settentrionale

    Est: $1,200 - $2,400

ZATTA, Antonio (fl. 1757-1797). Carta Geografica del Canada nell America Settentrionale. Engraved map with original hand color. Venice, 1778. 14 7/8" x 19" sheet. This exquiste map of the Great Lakes is based upon Guillaume Delisle's important map of 1703, entitled "Carte du Canada ou de la Nouvelle France." It was published in Antionio Zatta's Atlas, Atlantic novissiomo, and is to be commended for its delicate coloring and beautiful cartouche showing the bounties of the Great Lakes, as its inhabitants fish and hunt game. The map is fascinating for a number of different reasons. Delisle's map was the first printed map to locate Detroit, just two years after its founding, and thus Zatta's example is one of the first Italian maps to depict the city. It also shows French efforts at fortification. The Ohio River is realistically situated, however, its name is confused with that of the Wabash River. Moreover, Delisle and Zatta included the mythical Riviere Longue, the land of the Gnacsitares and land of the Mozeemleks which Louis-Armand de Lom d'Arce, baron de Lahontan, had recorded in his 1703 Nouveaux Voyages de M. le Baron de Lahontan dans l'Amérique Septentrionale. Lahontan had apparently derived his information from local American Indian tribes who he stated, "are as ignorant of Geography as of other Sciences, and yet they draw the most exact Maps imaginable of the Countries they're acquainted with, for there's nothing wanting in them but the Longitude and Latitude of Places:.. . The Ports, Harbours, Rivers,... &c. counting the Distances by Journeys and Half-journeys of the Warriers.. These Chorographical Maps are drawn upon the Rind of your Birch tree; and when the old Men hold a Council about War or Hunting they never fail to make use of them." He surmised that the Riviere Longue led to a large salt lake, some 300 leagues around, which in turn drained into the ocean. Zatta included a brief outline of Lahontan's findings in a caption placed below the cartouche.

Colonial Great Lakes, Florida. Antonio Zatta, Il Paese de' Selvaggi Outauacesi, e Kilistinesi Intorno al Lago Superiore, from Atlante Novissimo, 1778 (circa). Hand Color. This is one sheet of Zatta's version of John Mitchell's epic and important map of the United States. The whole map was titled "Le Colonie Unite dell' America Settentrle" and was published as a set of twelve individual maps. This sheet depicts Lake Superior, based on the Bellin model. The lake is shown with the imaginary and persistent island of Philippeaux, and the Keweenaw Peninsula is crudely delineated and named Trasporto. A large inset "Supplemento alla Florida Orientale" shows the tip of southern Florida and the Bahamas. The title appears above the top border and translates, "The Country of the Savage Ottowas and Christineauz on the shores of Lake Superior." LITERATURE: Kershaw #980; Sellers and Van Ee #163.

Zatta - Map of North America

    Est: $500 - $1,000

This excellent map is from Antonio Zatta's Atlante Novissimo published in Venice between 1776 and 1785. Zatta was an Italian editor, cartographer, and publisher. He was particularly active between 1757 and 1797, and is most known for the atlas presented here Atlante Novissimo. In this work he published the first impression of the Islands visited by Captain Cook. Map featured: America settentrionale divisa ne'suoi principali stati This is a detailed map of North America. It also includes the imagined Chinese Colony of Fou Sang in Canada based on Hui Shen's supposed voyage of 499 AD. It was mostly discredited later, but was believed to be where the Chinese first made contact with the west coast of North America. It shows the Northwest Passage based on Russian Explorations published by the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris. The scale of North America is too wide, and many rivers are shown far longer than the actual reach. Zatta combined almost every 17th and 18th century myth and fact of the American west into this single map.

    MAP, Pacific Ocean, Zatta

    Est: $800 - $950

North Pacific Ocean. Antonio Zatta, Nuove Scoperte de' Russi al Nord del Mare del Sud si nell' Asia, che nell' America, from Atlante Novissimo, 1776 (dated). Hand Color. Fascinating chart showing the western coast of North America from the Baja Peninsula, along the coast of California to Alaska and thence to the Bering Strait and the Kamchatka Peninsula. The map presents an interesting array of hypothetical cartography. The northwest coast of North America is filled with the fictitious system of rivers and lakes of the Northwest Passage that were supposedly discovered by Admiral de Fonte. In addition to those wide passages that connect Hudson Bay with the Pacific, two rivers provide possibilities for the legendary River of the West theories. Alaska is represented by a group of islands clustered off the coast of Russia, collectively identified as Isole Alessiane. There is a notation of the legendary Chinese colony of Fou-Sang in the general vicinity of Vancouver Island. The pictorial title cartouche includes several incongruent animals - a crocodile, an elephant, a rhinoceros, and an ostrich. Colonial Southern United States. Antonio Zatta, Luigiana Inglese, Colla Parte Occidentale della Florida, della Giorgia, e Carolina Meridonale, from Atlante Novissimo, 1780 (circa). Hand Color. This map provides a great regional description of the Gulf Coast from New Orleans to Florida, and of the valley of the Mississippi River north to above the Arkansas River where Hernando de Soto was supposedly buried. The map also details Mobile Bay and the course of the Albama River and tributaries, as well as the region of Capo S. Biagio and the course of the Apalachicola River. In the north, the prominent trading route, Strada de Coll Welk, nearly reaches the Mississippi River and is marked with distances between important points. Another road is shown in Florida and several Indian trails are depicted. Numerous Indian tribes are located and there are notations concerning the quality of the land. The map is sheet X from Zatta's Le Colonie Unite dell' America Settentrle, which is often referred to as the Italian edition of John Mitchell's map, on which it is based. Zatta's maps retain Mitchell's scale, but being smaller are more legible. Zatta also included updated legends (in Italian) with notations concerning the Revolutionary War, such as Burgoyne's defeat at Saratoga. This example is accompanied by a copy of the map printed on a transparency sheet.
