JR Zaragoza 1899 A painter trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Oviedo, José Ramón Zaragoza began his career in the last decade of the 19th century, participating in the national exhibitions of 1892 and 1897, where he received an honorable mention. In 1904, he was awarded a scholarship to further his training in Rome, where he remained until 1910. He also visited Paris and London, and toured Holland, Germany and Brittany. On his return, one of the portraits he painted on this trip won him the first medal at the 1915 National Exhibition. His works can be found in the Asturias Fine Arts Museum, Oviedo Town Hall, Madrid's Círculo de Bellas Artes and Gijón's Institut Jovellanos, among other collections.

You can enclose a certificate issued by the artist's family, at the buyer's request and cost. Measurements: 124 x 176 cm; 134,5 x 186 cm (frame). Ramón Zaragoza was a great admirer of Velázquez's painting. From his formative years he visited the Prado Museum and studied the Meninas in depth. The copy shown here of "La venus del espejo" (National Gallery, London) bears witness to a profound knowledge of the Baroque master's work, as well as a privileged artistic pulse: the vivid pink flesh tones of the model, the way the white sheet spreads out, the sense of matter printed on the silk coverlet, the blurred reflection of the woman in the mirror... are all aspects that testify to a worthy follower of Velázquez's trail. With the utmost wisdom, he succeeds in making the crescent body acquire tactile qualities, as does the little Cupid. Ramón Zaragoza's painting, with its naturalistic language, has always been devoted to the enhancement of feminine sensuality, in its forms and freshness, but without idealisation. On this occasion he achieves this through this carnal and realistic Venus, as it was also in Velázquez's interest to take young women from his environment as models rather than depicting unreal goddesses. A painter trained at the Oviedo School of Arts and Crafts, José Ramón Zaragoza began his career in the last decade of the 19th century, taking part in the National Exhibitions of 1892 and 1897, receiving an honourable mention in the latter year. That same year he was awarded a scholarship by the Diputación de Asturias to continue his studies at the San Fernando School in Madrid, where his teacher was Menéndez Pidal. He continued to exhibit his works at the National Exhibitions, and in 1901 and 1906 he was awarded a second medal. In 1904 he was awarded a scholarship to further his training in Rome, where he remained until 1910. He also travelled to Paris and London, and toured Holland, Germany and Brittany. On his return, one of the portraits he painted on this trip won him the first medal at the National Exhibition of 1915. During his European tour he also took part in international exhibitions and was awarded the second medal at the Universal Exhibition in Munich in 1913 and an honourable mention at the Paris Salon of 1914. In 1923 he had an individual exhibition at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Madrid. He also produced decorative projects, such as the three panels painted for the Círculo de Bellas Artes in the capital in 1925. Three years later he was appointed, by competitive examination, professor at the School of Arts and Crafts in the same city and in 1930, also by competition, professor of painting at the San Fernando School. He was appointed a full member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1948, shortly after his death. He is currently represented in the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, Oviedo City Hall, the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and the Jovellanos Institute in Gijón, among other collections.

It was exhibited in the exhibition-homage to the artist, held in the exhibition hall of the Municipal House of Culture of Cangas de Onis, in the spring of 2008. A young model, taking advantage of a break of the painter, entertains herself by contemplating herself in a large moon mirror, which allows us to admire her nudity from a double perspective. As usual in the painting of José Ramón Zaragoza, the naturalistic language is devoted to the enhancement of female sensuality, in its forms and freshness, but without idealizing it. The painter devotes the same attention to capture the smoothness of the velvet of the armchair, the fine porcelain of the jar with its brushes... It also highlights the compositional skill, in the play of reflections that enlarge the room translating its proportions with verism. It was exhibited in "A Century of Spanish Art, 1856-1956", Madrid 1956, as stated on the label on the back. Measurements: 146 x 172 cm; 154 x 178 cm (frame). The influence of Manet's "Nude on the Grass" can be seen in this important painting, due to the daring treatment of the genre theme. Just as Manet had introduced a female nude among dressed gentlemen, here too there is a certain provocation by introducing the nude figure in a country scene, next to a lady dressed in white, protected with litmus, and accompanied by a third figure with a naked torso carrying a basket overflowing with tropical fruits. The latter introduces an exotic note to the painting. Her bronze skin contrasts with the pearly flesh tones of the other two, who, if we look at their respective physiques, seem to be the same model, dressed and naked. With this, José Ramón Zaragoza would be introducing another artistic wink, in this case to Goya. Regardless of the symbolic interpretations, what stands out above all is the plastic quality, the sensuality that emanates from the bodies thanks to the skillful drawing, as well as the play of light and shadow, and the work of glazes. The shadows meander over the bodies and zigzag in a wide tonal range on the white tablecloth. As usual in the impressionist tradition, the shadows are imbued with color, never dark. Las formas geomÃ©tricas como nudos, espirales o entrelazos adquieren en este Diptico su expresion mas personal.Los colores primarios, una constante en su obra, se oponen, el azul y el rojo, como campos en los que Broto actua con capas de pintura muy liquida a modo de veladuras y recurriendo a la tecnica del dripping y lineas horizontales a modo de cintas adhesivas remarcando el geometrismo de la composiciÃ³n.
