    WOJCIECH ZAMECZNIK (1923-1967) POCIAG. 1959. 46x33 inches, 116 3/4x83 3/4 cm. Condition B+: tears, creases and abrasions at edges, small losses along top edge. Two-sheets, unattached. Paper. Zamecznik was a versatile Renaissance Man of design. Most prolific in the poster field, he created over 200 posters, and also worked with photography, typography, interior design, set design, book graphics and record covers. In the circle of Polish poster artists, he was the one best known for incorporating photography, experimenting with "the laboratory treatment of photographic material" to create different atmospheres (Polish Film Poster p. 42). This work exemplifies his "soft transition of tones, blurring the outlines' vividness, and mastered dosing of colour" (ibid. p. 43). With the dark background compartmentalized by vertical stripes (and the numbers of a train's seats) separating the photographic faces, "the artist achieved the deep harmony between artistic means of expression and the idea of the film, i.e. the vision of interpersonal relationships formed under the influence of existentialism" (ibid. p. 53).
