Greek/New Zealand artist. Birth: Nov. 21, 1917 Death: Dec. 19, 1997John Athanasiou Zambelis died Dec. 19, 1997. Mr. Zambelis was born in Mytika, Akarnanias, Greece on Nov. 21, 1917. He left Greece to study art in Wellington, New Zealand, where he lived and worked as an artist. He had many exhibits in New Zealand, London and Paris. In 1961 John Zambelis came to the United States for the purpose of exhibiting his art in Washington, D.C., at the invitation of the American Embassy. After exhibiting in Washington, D.C., and New York City, he moved to Chesapeake, where he resumed painting upon retirement from General Electric in 1986. Recent exhibits include shows in Lefkas, Greece, and at the Tidewater Visual Arts Center, Portsmouth. He was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Norfolk.
