        Dec. 27, 2016

Karl Wenzel Zajicek, Watercolor, ‘Spital am Pyhrn’, c. 1910

        Est: €1,200 - €1,500

Watercolor on paper Austria, circa 1910 Karl Wenzel Zajicek (1860-1923) – Austrian master of watercolor painting Signed lower left ‘K. Zajicek’ and titled lower right ‘Spital am Phyrn’ Sheet size: 21.8 x 27.6 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Austria A fine and extremely detailed drawing by a master of Viennes vedutas, whose watercolors are hardly surpassed in quality and execution This watercolor by Karl Wenzel Zajicek depicts a view of Spital am Pyhrn, a small village in Upper Austria. In the foreground extends a garden, left with a small figural scene with field workers. Behind a little wall thrones the Phyrn abbey before an imposing mountain backdrop. Zajicek was primarily a chronicler of the city of Vienna but he created some views of the countryside of Austria. This atmospheric composition shows the artist for the typical fine and detailed elaboration of his subjects, which boasts a clever play of light and shadow effects. The drawing is signed lower left ‘K. Zajicek’ and titled lower right ‘Spital am Phyrn’. It is in good condition consistent with age. The sheet is permanently mounted on strong paper. Along the left and upper margins there is soiling due to framing. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 35 x 43.5 cm, the sheet size is 21.8 x 27.6 cm. Karl Wenzel Zajicek (1860-1923) Karl Wenzel Zajicek initially trained as a watchmaker. But he had already developed a passion for painting at a young age and received lessons in architecture and painting under Ludwig Krenn. In Vienna Zajicek regularly visited the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Albertina where he studied the great masters. He painted mostly watercolors in which he chronicled the life Vienna during the reign of Emperor Franz Josef I. With a circular panorama of Vienna, which he painted after a drawing by Emil Hütter, Zajicek eventually establish himself as a painter. He received numerous commissions, also from the imperial court and created an extensive oeuvre of atmospheric watercolors.
