Zhartmann a eu une énorme influence sur plusieurs générations d'artistes en poussant ses étudiants à adopter un style personnel et son emploi de couleurs fortes a pu anticiper l'expressionnisme. Après avoir découvert l'Italie et en particulier le village de Civita d'Antino en 1883, il y créa une colonie d'artistes qui s'y retrouvait chaque été avec lui pendant une vingtaine d'années jusqu'en 1911.
