Ossip Zadkine Sold at Auction Prices

Water color painter, Sculptor, Printer, Illustrator, b. 1888 - d. 1967

Ossip Zadkine (28 January 1888 – 25 November 1967) was a Russian-born artist who lived in France. He is primarily known as a sculptor, but also produced paintings and lithographs.

Zadkine was born on 28 January 1888 as Yossel Aronovich Tsadkin in the city of Vitsebsk, part of the Russian Empire (now Belarus). He was born to a Jewish father and a mother named Zippa-Dvoyra, who he claimed to be of Scottish origin.[5] Ossip had 5 siblings: sisters Mira, Roza and Fania and brothers Mark and Moses.

At the age of fifteen, Zadkine was sent by his father to Sunderland to learn English and ‘good manners’. He then moved to London and attended lessons at the Regent Street Polytechnic where he considered the teachers to be too conservative.[6] Zadkine settled in Paris in 1910. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts for six months. In 1911 he lived and worked in La Ruche. While in Paris he joined the Cubist movement, working in a Cubist idiom from 1914 to 1925. He later developed his own style, one that was strongly influenced by African and Greek art.

1921 he obtained French citizenship. Zadkine served as a stretcher-bearer in the French Army during World War I, and was wounded in action. He spent World War II in the US. His best-known work is probably the sculpture The Destroyed City (1951-1953), representing a man without a heart, a memorial to the destruction of the center of the Dutch city of Rotterdam in 1940 by the German Luftwaffe.

Ossip Zadkine (1888-1967), Patinated bronze, showing a drawing instructor standing behind a student, first cast by Rudier, Paris, 1936, version 1/5, signed and numbered on top of the plinth: ‘O. ZADKINE 1/5’.In 1923, physician Hendrik Wiegersma (1891-1969) welcomed the artist Otto van Rees (1884-1957) and his family in Deurne. Van Rees, who had received his artistic training in France, had been seriously injured four years earlier in a train accident in Pont-sur-Yonne. His daughter did not survive the disaster. In Deurne, Van Rees was able to recover – and in order not to become completely alienated from the Parisian art scene that he had left behind, Van Rees regularly invited foreign artists to the East Brabant landscape. In this way, the physician Wiegersma also came into contact with new art movements, and the inspired doctor started painting in 1924. Wiegersma’s new friends and sources of inspiration, the Russian sculptor Moissey Kogan (1879-1943) and the writer Charles-Albert Cingria (1883-1954) also brought him into contact with the Russian-French sculptor Ossip Zadkine. In 1926, Wiegersma and his wife visited Cingria in Paris, and after Zadkine joined the company there, a close and lifelong friendship developed between Zadkine and the Dutch physician. The present sculpture, La leçon de dessin (or Le conseiller), was made by Zadkine in 1936. The first casting took place that same year and was carried out by Rudier in Paris. The present work is the first piece to be cast in this edition and was purchased by Wiegersma from the artist himself in 1936. As described by Sylvain Lecombre in Ossip Zadkine. l’Œuvre sculpté (1994), this particular purchase is mentioned in a list of works annotated by Zadkine:‘Listes d’oeuvres annotées par Zadkine:“Le Conseilleur [sic], bronze, 5 ép, 1937;1) Musée d’Art moderne, Paris;2) Coll. Wiegersma;3) Coll. Henriquez, Curaçao.” The first casting of five pieces by Rudier, from which the present sculpture derives, remained unfinished after three pieces. In 1950, a second edition of four pieces was cast by Susse fondeur (3/5 to 5/5), plus two épreuves d’artiste and two copies H.C. The Musée Zadkine owns one épreuve d’artiste and a copy H.C.1 by Susse fondeur. The sculpture acquired by the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris in 1939 is the second piece of this casting (II/V).The style that Zadkine employed during the 1920s, which was strongly influenced by cubism, made way for a more neoclassical approach in La leçon de dessin. In the 1930s, the sculptor opted for freer forms, as well as an interplay of concave and convex which enabled him to carefully direct the formation of shadows. Moreover, in his bronzes from this period we notice a clear preference for mythology and the Arts; works such as Les ménades (1934-35), Le compositeur (or l’inspiré, 1936) and Musiciens (1936) can almost be seen as a series – a series to which La leçon de dessin strongly belongs. , 'La leçon de dessin' (or Le conseiller), 1936, France, H 64 cm, Provenance:- Purchased by physician and artist Hendrik Wiegersma (1891-1969) from Ossip Zadkine in 1936;Then passed on to the current owner via inheritance, In good condition,
