YVA (1900–1942) | Model Leila Diane presents beach fashion, Berlin c. 1929 | Vintage silver print, single-weight glossy paper, very good condition 23,9 x 16,4 cm Photographer’s copyright stamp, agency label and several handwritten notations in pencil on the reverse Die Berliner Fotografin Yva, geboren als Else Ernestine Neuländer, war eine anerkannte Mode- und Porträtfotografin der Zwischenkriegszeit. 1936 wurde Helmut Neustädter, der später unter dem Namen Helmut Newton berühmt wurde, ihr Assistent und sie die Lehrerin von Newton. 1942 starb sie in einem Vernichtungslager der Nazis. Berlin photographer Yva, born Else Ernestine Neuländer, was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer of the interwar period. In 1936 Helmut Neustädter, who later became famous under the name Helmut Newton, became her assistant and she was Newton’s teacher. She died in an Nazi camp in 1942.

Aufgrund ihres jüdischen Familienhintergrundes bekam sie unter der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur Berufsverbot. Zunächst konnte sie durch eine formelle Übergabe des Ateliers weiterarbeiten und auch noch Lehrlinge ausbilden, wie etwa Helmut Neustädter, der später unter dem Namen Newton berühmt wurde. Anfang der 1940er starb sie in einem Vernichtungslager. Berlin photographer Yva, born Else Ernestine Neuländer, was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer of the interwar period. Because of her Jewish family background, she was banned from working under the National Socialist dictatorship. At first, she was able to continue working by formally handing over the studio and could still also to train apprentices, such as Helmut Neustädter, who later became famous under the name Newton. She died in an extermination camp in the early 1940s.

Vintage prints, Silbergelatine. Um 1935. Ca. 22,5 : 16,5 cm. Rückseitig mit Atelierstempel. Rückseitig betitelt und mit einer Werk- oder Modellnummer bezeichnet. - I. Modell: Meisterschule f. Mode. München. Abendanzug: brauner Rock aus Crepe Satin, Bluse aus Goldbrokat. Der AG Schostal-Yva-Aufkleber zum Teil entfernt, darunter der Berliner Atelierstempel. - II. Complet, Kleid und Jacke aus beige-farbenem Wollstoff [...] Modell Deutsche Meisterschule für Mode, München. - III. Hausanzug, blaue Hose, blau-weisse Jacke. Modell Hermann Gerson. Der Atelier-Stempel gestrichen, der AG Schostal-Aufkleber entfernt. - Die berühmte Modefotografin Yva (1900-1942, eigentlich Else Neuländer-Simon) hatte 1934 ihr neues Atelier in der Berliner Schlüterstraße eröffnet. Obwohl sie wegen ihrer jüdischen Abstammung bereits 1933 Berufsverbot erhalten hatte, gelang es ihr, dieses in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Atelier Schostal noch einige Jahre zu umgehen. 1936 begann ein gewisser Helmut Neustädter, später als Helmut Newton weltberühmt, bei Schostal seine Ausbildung. 1938 musste Yva ihr Atelier endgültig schließen, 1942 wurde sie in das KZ Sobibor deportiert und dort ermordet. Minimale Eckknicke, meist nur in den schmalen weißen Rändern.
