    In this work, Bo Yuan painted a poetic scene depicting plum blossoms and delicate pink petals. He used dark ink to depict the trunk and branches, reflecting his deft skill. Known for their ability to thrive despite the harshness of winter, the plum blossom is a symbol of perseverance and renewal. Venerable Master Bo Yuan is an important figure in Buddhism in Malaysia. Not only is he one of the major contributors, he is also a celebrated poet and an accomplished calligrapher. Bo Yuan entered monkhood at the age of 19 and came to Malaysia in 1961. Apart from propagating the Dharma by preaching and literary works, the late Venerable was also noted in the Arts Circle for his calligraphy and Chinese brush paintings. His creative works earned him the “Spiritual Ink” 神墨碑林 and “Poetic Sage” 詩聖碑林 award of China.

Kuala Lumpur, 2009 PLUM BLOSSOMS, 1979 梅花,己未年 Signed, dated, inscribed and sealed (upper left) Ink and colour on paper, framed 72 cm x 138 cm The late master Most Venerable Bo Yuan is a prominent Zen artist and Buddhist figure in Malaysia. He took the tonsure and became a monk at the age of 19, and entered into the school of Zen when he was just 22 years old. He moved to Malaysia in 1947, and took on several positions in the Buddhist societies here, such as the Vice President of the Malaysian Buddhist Association and the Advisor of the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia. As an established Chinese ink artist and calligraphist, as well as a reputable poet; he had published a number of books containing a collection of his poems and artworks. 伯圆长老祖籍为福建福安人,于19岁剃度出家,22岁进入禅门。他之后在鼓山涌泉寺和福州崇福寺担任职位,并于1947年被派遣至马来西亚槟城极乐寺作为监院。他曾是马来西亚佛教总会副主席和马来西亚佛教青年总会宗教顾问,也常被邀请到其他佛教团体当中任职。他的著作有《松涛声里话前尘》、《五台山上一行者》等等。
