        Orley Ypon (b. 1973) - See No Evil (Kakapa-Kapa)

        Est: ₱400,000 - ₱520,000

See No Evil (Kakapa-Kapa) signed and dated 2015 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 36" (122 cm x 91 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP Orley Ypon’s brand of figurative painting has led him to become one of the finest realists in the Philippine contemporary art scene today. Having gained consistent national recognition through the likes of the Art Petron, the GSIS and the AAP’s (Art Association of the Philippines) national painting competitions, the NCCA’s Ani ng Dangal awarding body, and even internationally through the New Jersey-based Art Renewal Center’s competitions, Orley Ypon has carved himself as a living master of realism. The piece at hand is visually reminiscent of his GSIS competition breakthrough work entitled Ahon (2008), characterized by a hectic composition of naked figures covered in mud while caught in dynamic gestures that seem to either crawl in desperation or emerge from the mire. While Ypon had already been known for his social realist paintings even before his Ahon series, with OberOber (2001) being among his seminal pieces for its starkly nostalgic image of childhood in Filipino folk life, it was in his Ahon series and its offshoot works that his mastery of social realism would culminate. Here, for example, by transposing the image of carabaos wallowing in mud into a frenzied composition of human figures, Ypon brings a touch of allegory into his social realism. The Philippine carabao is often associated with ideal qualities of perseverance and hard work, but here, the transposition of image leaves the viewer with a less than ideal picture of reality: Ypon’s figures are ultimately graphic in their disorder, viscerally pitiful in their toil and seemingly blind to the grander scheme of things that has endlessly trapped them in such circumstances. However, what truly sets Ypon apart from more conventional artists is his deliberate departure from traditional expectations. While his proficiency in classical methods might suggest a focus on idealized beauty or picturesque landscapes, Ypon boldly challenges these assumptions by embracing a distinctly different approach. Instead of adhering to the conventions of polished and romanticized portrayals, Ypon offers his audience unembellished glimpses into the authenticity of everyday life. He captures scenes with raw honesty, portraying the essence of ordinary existence without the veneer of idealization. At first glance, this particular piece might evoke memories of landscapes from a bygone era, seemingly aligned with classical traditions. However, a closer examination reveals Ypon’s fresh and unique perspective. Unlike the idealized depictions often found in traditional landscapes or genre scenes, which are imbued with romanticized beauty or allegorical significance, Ypon’s work presents a stark and unadorned reality. Rather than offering an idyllic vision, his landscapes confront the viewer with a candid and truthful portrayal of the world as it is, celebrating the beauty in its unfiltered authenticity. Agony and Triumph signed and dated 2020 (lower right) oil on canvas 32” x 48” (81 cm x 122 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UPYpon's command of classical techniques resonates throughout his body of work, skillfully weaving the time- honored artistic principles of the past into a captivating contemporary experience. Yet, what distinguishes Ypon from conventional artists is his intentional divergence from the expected norms. While his mastery of classical methods might suggest an inclination towards idealized beauty and picturesque landscapes, Ypon boldly defies these assumptions by embracing a markedly different approach. In his artistic pursuits, Ypon opts to offer viewers unembellished glimpses of ordinary life. He fearlessly portrays raw and unfiltered scenes that encapsulate the very essence of everyday existence. Though this specific piece might initially resemble landscapes predating Ypon's craftsmanship, a closer inspection of the subject matter and composition reveals a fresh and distinct approach. Traditional landscapes by academic and genre scene painters often exude an idealized depiction of their subjects, capturing romanticized beauty or serving as allegories for the divine. However, Ypon's landscape diverges from this idealized treatment. Rather than presenting an idyllic portrayal, the viewer is confronted with a candid and unadorned depiction of reality. (Jed Daya)

Orley Ypon (b. 1973) Earth, Trees, and Sky signed and dated 2016 (lower left) oil on canvas 42" x 48" (107 cm x 122 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot Renowned as a master of the classical form, Orley Ypon possesses a unique ability to convey a profound sense of insight and nuance that is frequently associated with traditional art pieces. His mastery of classical techniques is evident throughout his oeuvres, where he skillfully employs the artistic principles of the past to create a captivating contemporary experience. However, what sets Ypon apart from conventional artists is his deliberate departure from the predictable. While his adherence to classical techniques might lead one to expect works that idealize beauty and depict utopian vistas, Ypon defies this assumption by embracing a contrasting approach. In his artistic endeavors, Ypon chooses to present viewers with unvarnished glimpses of ordinary existence. He unabashedly portrays raw, unfiltered scenes that capture the essence of everyday life. Though this particular piece may appear to landscapes that predate Ypon’s craft, a closer look at his subject matter and composition reveals a novel approach. Landscapes, especially those done by academic and genre scene painters, often featured idyllic depictions of their chosen subjects; whether it be a way to capture or express romanticized beauty or act as an allegory for the divine. But Ypon’s landscape seemingly lacks this sort of idealized treatment. Instead we are faced with a very frank and very real scene. Even the subject matter, that of an incline featuring trees and rocks, lacks the romanticized elements of Ypon’s predecessors. This departure from the usual idealized depictions challenges the viewer's perceptions, inviting them to see beauty in the authenticity of the mundane. Ypon's canvases become windows into moments that might otherwise go unnoticed—moments of vulnerability, simplicity, and honesty. By juxtaposing the classical framework with the unadorned realities of life, Ypon introduces a new layer of meaning into his art. His compositions serve as a bridge between tradition and modernity, urging us to contemplate the beauty that resides within the simplicity of the human experience. (Jed Daya)

Orley Ypon (b. 1973) Interregnum signed and dated 2012 (lower right) oil on canvas 24" x 36" (61 cm x 91 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Cebuano artist Orley Ypon is the first Filipino to be included in the list of “Living Masters” after winning awards in the prestigious ‘Art Renewal Center’ in New York from 2011 to 2013. The word “interregnum” means a transition period, which is depicted by shock, adjustment, and eventual rise, as depicted in this painting. Among local collectors, his works are called “putik putik.” In 2017, his works were shown at León Gallery International; the show was named Spectacula. It is befitting that his paintings are called “spectacular,” for Ypon is a true living master. Born in 1973 in Toledo, Cebu, Orley Ypon stands as a prominent contemporary Filipino artist renowned for his expertise in portraiture. His artistic journey finds its origins in his early years, where his penchant and skill for painting blossomed through rendering portraits of his loved ones. What distinguishes Ypon is his adept fusion of classical academic techniques and modern societal nuances, an achievement often commended by his peers. In a departure from the traditional application of classical methods, Ypon's work diverges by presenting raw and unfiltered depictions of ordinary existence. Contrary to the typical idealistic and utopian interpretations of beauty derived from classical techniques, Ypon steers clear of this conventional approach. Instead, his artistic vision revolves around candid portrayals of reality. Through his pieces, Ypon aptly captures the unvarnished truth and elegance encapsulated within the human experience. He did portraits of himself and his family and friends throughout his growing years. He left his province as a teenager, after a few semesters of studying architecture, to make his mark in Manila. A series of jobs as an export handicraft artist led him all over the country from Pampanga, Paete, Laguna, and Davao. He eventually returned to his hometown to pursue a career as a fulltime artist. A master of the classical form, his oeuvres are able to communicate a sense of insight and nuance often attributed to traditional pieces. Although the adherence to classical techniques results in art that appears to portray beauty as idealized and utopian, Ypon deviates from this cliché by presenting stark and unfiltered scenes of ordinary life. This is best observed in his most famous works with themes that convey social issues and the human condition, but it can still be seen in several of his landscape paintings. “I remember my love and interest in art started when I was five years old,” said Ypon in an interview. “Art gives my soul satisfaction. Even when I am at home and I see my artworks, they each give me total happiness.” (P.I.R.)

Santander Seaside (Plein Air) signed and dated 2016 (lower right) oil on canvas 24” x 32” (61 cm x 81 cm) Orley Ypon is renowned for his masterful combination of conventional academic technique and contemporary social depth. This is best observed in his most famous works, wherein he juxtaposes seemingly hyper-realistic subjects amidst heavily dramatized settings and scenarios, but it can still be seen in several of his landscape paintings. A realist in life as well as in art, Ypon creates pieces that his audience can understand and appreciate. For him, realism requires the artist to consider many aspects, such as technique, color, and composition. Above all, the artist must be an observer, drawing on their experiences to feel their works. Around the time this piece was made, Ypon founded the Aroma Art Atelier, a non-profit organization that aims to share ideas and foster camaraderie among other painters in his city. The atelier’s practice- based approach encourages students to study the foundations of painting while developing their styles and creative aspirations. Santander is on the south coast of Cebu province, where Ypon has his atelier. “It’s a place where the fishermen gather to rest and have more than a few drinks.” This en plein air work captures the spontaneity of the scene: a wooded glen, a tent among the thickets, looking out to a blue sea. Orley Ypon (b. 1973) Move On II signed and dated 2015 (lower left) oil on canvas 36" x 72" (91 cm x 183 cm) EXHIBITED Altro Mondo Greenbelt 5, Bidlisiw, Makati City, October 23 - November 3, 2015 Orley Ypon is mostly recognized for his fondness of details and love of human figures. His creations manifest the artist’s developing his objectives into themes that convey social issues, human conditions, and further expanding into new dimensions of his art, such as this featured piece titled Move On II. The oeuvre depicts people rising from the mud; those already risen in dry ground were pulling others still below them. It has movement and captures the same motions. The painting comes alive with a particular motion when the compatriots help and pull each other out of the morass. One could interpret it as the encompassing and evokeness of the peoples’ desire for reform, for change. It bears the passion about the people wanting to get out of the rot they are in - portraying that people won’t just back down to the grievances they feel - a patriotic painting that echoed as well, the movement of Luna’s Spoliarium. It evokes a final freedom achieved.

His art is a result of mainly self - study, with only a couple of semesters at the Cebu Institute of Technology and at the UP Cebu College of Fine Arts as formal training. A constant finalist in painting exhibitions in the Visayas and Metro Manila, Orley gained attention when he won the First Prize in the Art Association of the Philippines’ National On - the - Spot Painting Competition in 2001. In the same year, Orley made his mark at the Art Petron National Painting Competition, bagging the Grand Prize in 2001 for Ober - Ober. He is mostly recognized for his fondness of details and love of human figures. His creations manifest the artist’s developing his objectives into themes that convey social issues, human conditions, and further expanding into new dimensions of his art, such as this featured piece titled Run. Ypon portrays crowds of Filipinos in their naked glory , half - smiling, half - smirking, in a seeming race to nowhere through this oeuvre featured in his Crusaders exhibit. The painting highlights the artist’s mastery of the human anatomy and eye for interesting detail. Well - composed and beautifully executed - the work subtly common on societal ills and concerns of the present. True to the Horatan ideal, though in a different form, Ypon seeks to delight and instruct the viewer, prodding him to open his eyes and look around with a fresh appreciation and understanding of his community and the world, and of himself.

Orley Ypon (b. 1973) Male Nude signed and dated 2019 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 42" (122 cm x 107 cm) A master of the classical form in the contemporary age, Orley Ypon’s works are able to communicate a sense of depth and nuance often attributed to more traditional pieces. A native of Toledo, Cebu, Ypon found his love for the arts at a relatively young age, when he found himself enjoying creating portraits for his family and friends. He then took a couple of semesters at the Cebu Institute of Technology and at the UP Cebu College of Fine Arts but opted to learn about art by himself instead. In 2011, he was given the Ani Ng Dangal award by the National Commission of Culture and the Arts. Ypon’s practice is often seen as a synthesis of classical modes of painting, and contemporary hyperrealism. This can be observed in the way Ypon creates his scenes, wherein he juxtaposes seemingly hyper-realistic subjects amidst heavily dramatized backdrops and situations. This particular piece by Ypon is emblematic of his iconic style, but can also be seen as a nod to the art of Russian painter Konstantin Makovsky. Ypon’s work features a man in a sitting position with his face facing something slightly away from the viewer and a distinctively red piece of cloth. The work mirrors a series of Makovsky’s works which also feature models, mostly male ones, in different positions, atop of a red piece of cloth. Though the work can be read as a nod, Ypon still manages to express his own individual style through the impeccable sense of detail present in his work. The connection between Ypon’s and Makovsky’s works adds a bit of intertext to the latter’s piece, effectively proving that the artist is not only well-versed in the technical side of his craft, but the context of his passion as well.
