        Feb. 06, 2024

Original Vintage WWI Poster Remember Belgium Ellsworth Young 1918 Liberty Loan

        Est: $400 - $800

The early days of WWI during the German invasion of Belgium are replicated here in this dramatic poster by Ellsworth Young (1866 - 1952). America's involvement in WWI was largely unanticipated, and quite expensive. The U.S. Government began soliciting bonds that everyday Americans could deposit to the cause, to be paid back by the government when the war ended with interest applied. This influx of cash flow allowed the US to buy tanks, feed soldiers, and essentially finance the path to victory. On April 24th 1917, just 18 days after the US joining WWI officially, Congress authorized the Secretary of the Treasury to issue bonds of the United States to the extent of $5,000,000,000. Twelve committees were created, one for every Federal Reserve District. These committees were entrusted with the work of selling the bonds in their respective districts. Every city, town and village had its own Liberty Loan Committee as part of the war effort. Buying bonds soon became a patriotic duty and a reason for American pride. You were given buttons to wear when you bought your bonds, so you could show your patriotism. The posters promoting the Liberty Bonds were mainly based in these ideas of patriotism, pride and freedom. This is an Original Vintage Poster, not a reproduction. It has been archivally backed onto linen and is in excellent condition. We fully guarantee the authenticity of our items.

A poster for WWI Liberty Bonds shows a German soldier leading a young girl by the hand: 'Remember Belgium. Buy Bonds; Fourth Liberty Loan.' Illustrated by Ellsworth Young. Germany violated Belgian neutrality in 1914. Scholarly debate continues on the extent to which German soldiers committed the many atrocities attributed to them during this period. This poster was used to promote the buying of American war bonds during the Fourth Liberty Loan, September 28 - October 19, 1918. The German Imperial Chancellor admitted in a Reichstag speech that Germany disregarded international law in invading Belgian territory. Belgian diplomatic papers to this effect are included to the left. A letter between two Belgian diplomats in August 1914 relays that the German Imperial Chancellor has admitted that Germany disregarded international law when it invaded Belgian territory. US WWI Lithographs were used during 1917 and 1918 to encourage citizens to buy Liberty Bonds, special charitable appeals, conserve food and goods and enforce patriotism. Since the federal government had banned commercial radio, the posters were needed to spread these messages. Many of the works were commissioned by well-known artists of the day. 1918 WWI "Remember Belgium" Poster by Ellsworth Young (American, 1866-1952)

        Est: $200 - $400

WWI Remember Belgium, 4th Liberty Loan, Young

        Est: $100 - $200

Artist: Ellsworth Young Artist Dates: 1866-1952 Signed Within Plate: Yes Date of Work: c. 1915-19 Description: After Germany invaded Belgium in 1914, the German soldier was often depicted as a savage â€aeHun,” an offensive term harking back to the nomadic tribe that had terrorized Europe under their barbaric leader, Attila, in the fifth century A.D. Ellsworth Young’s illustration portrays an evil German soldier as a Hun, leading an innocent Belgian girl off. The dark shadowed figures contrast sharply with the mottled green background and fire. Young was a noted magazine and book editor and was most known for his painting of landscapes. Lida Orzeck came across more than 750 vintage war posters from World War I and World War II in her family’s home basement that her father, David Orzeck, a Brooklyn doctor, had meticulously collected. Discovered in 1970, the posters â€" of which few pristine prints remain with the exception of the National Archives and the Library of Congress â€" were in mint condition, neatly catalogued and folded in brown wrapping paper from grocery stores. Size: 20"L x 28"H Weight: < 1 ounce Provenance: Dr. David Orzeck Condition: Tape marks on bottom border 1"L. Repairs on upper border (cover tears, 2" to 3"L). Poster has original fold marks and has not been exposed to sunlight, thus preserving the vibrant colors. Recently backed with archival paper (reversible). Artist Biography: Ellsworth Young (1866 Albia, Iowa â€" 1952 Evanston, Illinois) was an American magazine and book illustrator, and a noted painter of landscapes. He worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Collection of the Illinois State Museum, and was employed by the Denver Times and The Chicago Tribune as an editorial illustrator. Ellsworth Young studied at The Art Institute of Chicago with Oliver Dennett Grover and John Vanderpoel. Young, an Illinois artist, was a member of the Chicago Painters and Sculptors and the Oak Park River Forest Art League. He painted several posters for the war effort of World War I, his best-known probably being "Remember Belgium". The Allied Nations made use of images of supposed German atrocities to bolster their propaganda machine. In 2010 Western Illinois University began looking at stored works of art to refurbish, and discovered a rolled-up painting which held â€aetremendous historical significance.” It was a painting by Young of a river landscape in autumn, and had been commissioned in 1934 to hang in Monroe Hall (later known as Grote Hall) and remaining there for some 60 years until the Hall was demolished in 1991. The painting was sent to the Chicago Conservation Center to be restored. Meta: Poster, WWI, WWII, Military, Militaria, Army, Navy, Marines, AirForce, Propaganda.
