Aaron Young American, b. 1972 Landscape, 2010 Laminated glass with shredded tire rubber and epoxy resin 84 x 60 inches (213.4 x 152.4 cm) Provenance: Bortolami Galleries, New York Exhibited: Light Breaks Where No Sun Shines, December 2010, Bortolami Gallery at the Webster, Miami Beach Performance-based artist Aaron Young creates raw, confrontational situations, resulting in monolithic works standing as a testament to the performance. Among his best-known works are his pieces in which motorcycles are ridden across plywood, the resulting tire marks creating a network of abstract patterns. Roberta Young of the New York Times equated "Greeting Card," his motorcycle performance held at the Park Avenue Armory in 2007, to "watching gladiators at the Roman Colosseum." Often compared to controversial artist Chris Burden, Young has a penchant for aggressive, masculine works that are all things loud, dirty and bombastic. For this 2010 work, "Landscape," Young, in a continuation of these performances, produced the work by doing "burnouts" on a motorcycle while aimed at the sheet of glass. The eventual tire failure from being ridden to destruction caused molten rubber tire chunks to spray onto the glass surface. Finally, Young poured liquid glass overtop the shredded rubber to hold it into place, creating an ad-hoc glass and rubber sandwich. Getting closer to the piece, it seems one can still smell faint traces of motor oil and exhaust. C
