This woodblock depicts a boy on a raft in a river amongst a landscape of blossoming trees and a mountain. The bottom left-hand corner is signed Gesso in Japanese characters. Not much is known about the life of Gesso Yoshimoto (1881-1936); he was a Japanese Shin-Hanga artist active in the early 20th Century. It is likely that he was trained in traditional Japanese style painting as his woodblock prints convey mastery over composition and craftsmanship. The print is on a black matting in a black wooden frame. Including the frame, the dimensions are 6 1/2" X 16 1/4". Without the frame the dimensions are 3" X 13". All measurements are approximate. Condition: The print is in good condition. The frame shows signs of age. Provenance: From a Maine estate.
