A later painting titled No Contest, in a painterly realistic style. Painting reflects 2 fishing boats racing to a location in full sail. Born in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, in 1931, Murray Yorke spent most of his childhood sketching and dreaming the dreams of youth among the skeletal remains of the great fore and aft tern schooners which had returned to die in the same environment as their birth. Completely involved with the sea and ships, the young artist devoted his work to a documentation of the life he was eventually to lead as a fisherman on the Island of Grand Manan and later as a crew member of the coastal freighters. It is not until the early 1950 s, during his Grand Manan days, that the local artist, Nelson Greenlaw, encouraged him to pursue his talent more seriously after seeing one of his paintings. Murray Yorke owes most of his knowledge of oil painting to the generosity and encouragement offered by Greenlaw, who even started him off by lending him his own paints and brushes. It was still many years, however, before full-time painting was able to replace the business of making a living. Yet, slowly this was achieved by a gradual sale of his work. Murray devoted full time to painting with teaching two days a week at the Lighthouse Gallery in Tequesta, Florida. Murray resided in Florida eight months of the year on Singer Island, with the summer months spent on the East Coast of Canada.
