FROM THE ESTATE OF KENNETH KENDALL, LOS ANGELES, CALIFO

      Est: $2,000 - $4,000

FROM THE ESTATE OF KENNETH KENDALL, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA WILLIAM YELLOWLEES (Scottish, 1796-1856) Portrait of Master Campbell of Arbuthnot Oil on canvas 17-1/2 x 13-3/4 inches (44.5 x 34.9 cm) Inscribed on the upper stretcher: WYellowslee PROVENANCE: Property of the heir of the sitter, A. M. MacIver-Campbell; Ames Gallery, 1962, no. 464; Acquired from the above. William Yellowlees was known to his contemporaries as "the Little Raeburn," an acknowledgement of the excellent quality of his portraits as well as a comment on their size. This early-career portrait of a young boy has a large sense of personality and presence despite its diminutive scale. After working for some fifteen years in Edinburgh, Yellowlees moved to London where he met with much success. He was appointed cabinet portrait painter to the King's brother, the Duke of Sussex, and Prince Albert was among his patrons. He contributed twenty portraits to the Royal Academy between 1829 and 1845. Yellowlees's work is represented in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Scotland.
