    Samuel Yellin Style Wrought Iron Andirons w/ Bar.

    This is a pair of large antique hand-crafted wrought iron andirons or chenets, circa 1920's. Each measures 29 1/4" tall by 11 1/2" wide by 22 1/2" deep. The decorative cross bar measures 46 1/2" long. While not signed, these andirons are excellently hand-crafted in the style of Samuel Yellin. The andirons are in very good condition, with one andiiron missing a small finial on the back side. There is also a small amount of surface rust on the underside in some areas. (approximate) Lot Essay The Central Savings Bank Building (at the West 73rd Street convergence of Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue in New York) is representative of Samuel Yellin’s furious creative and productive pace throughout the late 1920s. For their new uptown headquarters, Central Savings Bank engaged bank architecture masters York & Sawyer to design a Renaissance palazzo style structure that recalled the firm’s crowning achievement in the field earlier that decade, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York Building (1922-24). Yellin had been commissioned for the Federal Reserve project metalwork as well, and between 1926 and 1928 the two firms produced for Central Savings a scaled-down version of their earlier joint project. Yellin’s metalwork commission for Central Savings Bank encompassed all the decorative and functional metal fixtures for the building: check desks, teller cages, grilles, interior and exterior doors, hardware, light fixtures, and further elements too numerous to list. A showplace for the prosperous bank, every element was custom made, however many of the designs echo similar work created a few years earlier for the Federal Reserve. The present lot is an excellent example of this process of stylistic refinement. Yellin designed a series of massive exterior lanterns for the entrances at the Federal Reserve, each larger than an adult person in size. At Central Savings, Yellin designed and fabricated a similar, smaller series of lanterns arrayed in individual or triple configuration. Both buildings’ lanterns share a common vocabulary (Yellin was an avid historian of antique ironwork, and both buildings' lanterns have a close common ancestor in Caparra’s famous sixteenth century lanterns at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence), but the Central Savings Bank iterations are more reserved in scale and ornament. The Central Savings Bank was a better than average steward of their building but did not hold their metalwork in particularly high regard. Midcentury photographs show Yellin’s exterior lanterns still in place on the building’s façade, but by the time the structure received exterior protection under New York’s landmark law in 1975 (interior protection of the banking hall would follow in 1993), Yellin’s lanterns had been replaced by simple cast iron stock fixtures. Despite this loss, the Central Savings Bank Building continues to display other exterior ironwork by Yellin, and the building itself remains a cherished fixture in the neighborhood; like the Ansonia and the Dakota, it functions as a gateway to the heart of the Upper West Side.     Samuel Yellin, "Sketch in Iron", A Study for the Philadelphia Museum of Art Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1924 Wrought iron Signed with impressed mark: "SAMUEL YELLIN PHILA. PA." H: 33 1/2, W: 25 3/4, D: 2 3/8 in. Illustrated Jack Andrews, Samuel Yellin Metalworker (1992), pg. 79, no. 158 Note This “sketch in iron” was for an unrealized commission for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which was under continuous construction between 1919 and 1928. Surviving shop and presentation drawings housed at the University of Pennsylvania’s Architectural Archives indicate that this sketch was designed and fabricated between February 19 and February 25, 1924 (see lot images for a copy of the final presentation drawing from February 25, 1924, courtesy of the archive). It is a section of the overall design, for a ground floor exterior window guard. The Museum ultimately commissioned Tiffany Studios to design its exterior ironwork in late 1924, leaving this sketch as the lone surviving three-dimensional artifact of Yellin’s design. Despite not winning the commission, Yellin remained close to many of the Museum’s leaders, including longtime director Fiske Kimball and donor Mary Louise Curtis Bok.     Samuel Yellin, "Sketch in Iron", Study for the Frick Residence Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1913-14 Wrought iron Unmarked H: 78 1/2, W: 24 5/8, D: 2 3/8 in. Note The present lot is a "sketch in iron" made by Samuel Yellin as part of his commission work for the Henry Clay Frick House in New York. Designed by Carrère & Hastings and located between 70th and 71st Streets facing Fifth Avenue, the Frick House was constructed between 1912 and 1914. While the entrance doors Yellin designed for the residence are well known, this sketch was created for proposed additional ironwork that was ultimately unrealized. Of particular interest is the three pickets in different designs, illustrating a range of options for the client.     Yellin, Samuel (Ukrainian/American, 1884-1940), Pair of Twin Bed Frames, 1924, these were commissioned by Edgar Kaufmann for his Fox Chapel Home, La Tourelle, where Samuel Yellin did a number of wrought iron commissioned works. 2 sets of wrought iron twin bed frames with side rails and foot boards, the headboard featuring three ibex like birds standing on posts with spirals side decorations and signature Yellin decorative embellishments. Headboard 59.25 x 52 x 3.5 inches, Footboard 43 x 51.25 x 3.5 inches. See the photos at the end of our listing for images of Yellin's original drawings of these pieces.
