SYDNEY JANIS YARD AMERICAN, CALIFORNIA, NEW YORK, ILLINOIS, 1855-1909 SPRING ORCHARD Watercolor Lower right signed: Sydney J. Yard Catalogue note: Born in Rockford, Illinois, Sydney Janis Yard studied in Chicago, New York and London, where he mastered English watercolor techniques under the Royal Academician Sutton Palmer. In the 1880s, Yard moved to California where he had studios in San Jose, Palo Alto, and San Francisco, before settling in Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1906. The artist is best known for his watercolor landscapes of inland California trees, gardens, and coastal scenes. Source: Artists at Continent's End: The Monterey Peninsula Art Colony, 1875-1907 (2006). Spring Orchard likely depicts almond trees in California's Central Valley, which blossom from mid-February to early March.

Yard initially worked in New York but traveled to California and started a photography business with Arthur Putnam Hill. They both later switched to painting, primarily landscapes.
