Von 1956 bis 1965 studierte er an der Kunstakademie von Zhejiang und war danach als Zeichner für einen Verlag tätig. 1978 wurde er als freischaffender Künstler anerkannt und machte sich in der Folge chinaweit einen Namen. 1989 emigrierte er, wie sein Freund Li Shan, nach New York, wo er in den 90er Jahren drei große Einzelausstellungen hatte. Auch in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, Tokyo und Beijing wurden seine Werke seitdem präsentiert. A painting by Xu Xi, titled March wind and depicting boats, a hut and two people at a river. Ink and colours on paper. Inscribed: San yue feng, dated ding chou sui (1997) and signed Xu Xi yu bi zhai (Xu Xi in the green atelier). Mounted on silk, glazed and framed.Published in: Xu Xi huaji, Beijing (Renminchubanshe, 1998), no. 53.From a European private collection.Xu Xi, born 1946 in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, studied from 1956 to 1965 at the Art Academy of Zhejiang and was recognized as an independent artist in 1978. In the 1980s he became known within China. In 1989 he emigrated to New York where he has had since than several single exhibitions as well as in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and Beijing.
