Xu Lei Print entitled Classics of Mountains and Seas. Xu Lei was born in 1963 in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. He works at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and is Art Director of Today Art Museum in Beijing. Xu Lei played a role in 1985’s New Wave art movement in China, and his work is a powerful yet sensitive juxtaposition of Chinese aesthetics and western innovations. Notable inspirations include Yves Klein, Marcel Duchamp, and Rene Magritte. Curtains to divide space like a stage, Ming dynasty furniture, birds, high-heeled shoes, cages, and folding screens are all elements which lend simultaneous unpredictability and harmony to his work, which is executed with a deft mastery of ink brush and rice paper. Xu Lei’s art may be seen at the Shanghai Art Museum, the Nanjing Art Institute, the Today Art Museum and Asian Division of the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. among others. Xu Lei has also shown his work at the National Art Museum of China, Guggenheim Museums in New York, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Hong Kong Arts Centre and several other museums and institutions. 57.2 cm x 73.5 cm.

PROVENANCE China Guardian Auction, Beijing, November 15, 2001, Lot 975 Acquired by the present owner from the above sale EXHIBITED Nanjing, Jiangsu Province Art Museum, Chuan Sheng Zao Jing, 2005 LITERATURE Chen Danqing, "Fable of Image," Xu Lei, Hebei, 2000, pp. 4 illustrated in color Today Art Museum, Beijing, Oriental Art/People, 1st edition, 2006 NOTE Xu Lei belongs to an influential school of post-traditional figurative painters, bringing the quality of literati painting from loftiness to a state of pessimistic elegance. Xu often adapts a stage setting into his frame by using elements from Chinese material culture, sometimes reminiscent of the set or background used in old film studios of the 1930s. In Flower over the Ocean, Xu's most representative work to date, the artist presents a poetic, claustrophobic and mysterious world populated by a horse imprinted with the very flowers that swirl about him in the water. In compositions such as this, Xu offers new possibilities to traditional Chinese painting as he creates imagined worlds without reference to a glorified antiquity.
