The landscape, in blues, purples, greens and browns illustrates craggy mountains surrounding a meandering river flowing into a lake. The painting is in very good condition with a few small areas of light foxing to the border. The sheet dimensions are 28 1/8 x 28 ¼ in. and the image dimensions are 20 ½ in. sq. (height x width). Provenance: Purchased by Ms. Helaine Ohayon and Ms. Amy Schwartz, directly from the artist at his studio in Hong Kong in 1988. Ms. Ohayon and Ms. Schwartz purchased several paintings in Hong Kong and China during this time, in the process creating a contemporary Chinese paintings collection, The Mandarin Studio. The collection was subsequently exhibited at Harvard University in 1989, asNew Expressions: Contemporary Chinese Brush Paintings, 1984-1989, in theAdams House Modern Chinese Painting Exhibition Series. Xiong Hai’s work can be viewed within the collections of the National Art Museum of China, the British Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, to name a few.
