WYLD, James Sr. (1790-1836). Mexico, the British Possessions in North America and the United States . . . 1846. Engraved case map; printed on two sheets, dissected into 36 sections and mounted on linen, edged in green silk, contemporary outline handcoloring. London: 1846. 56 7/8" x 53" sheet, 60" x 64" framed. Map made for the British People published at the onset of the Mexican War showing the battle for one of their two most important sources of Cotton for their Industrial Mills. "A VERY BEAUTIFUL MAP IN THE BEST OF WYLD'S CARTOGRAPHIC STYLE," which is in actuality a reduced reissue of his 1824 Map of North America without the top sheet of the Arctic region (Rumsey). Wyld's 1846 Map of the Mexico and the United States is one of the rarest and most fascinating maps of the region from the period. This version "updates some of the western geography, showing the Tule Lakes in California, Fremont's or South Pass, F[or]ts Hall and Boise and the Oregon Trail. However, it keeps the outdated topography of the Great Basin and California used in the 1824 edition" (Rumsey). Accompanied by the original diaper-patterned maroon cloth case with Wyld's paper label lettered "Mexico." QUITE SCARCE. James Wyld Sr. was a British cartographer and one of Europe's leading mapmakers. He made many contributions to cartography, including the introduction of lithography into map printing in 1812.

Compiled from Plans Deposited in the Patent Office Quebec; by Samuel Holland, Esq. Surveyor General…, from A New General Atlas of Modern Geography..., 1838 (dated). Hand Color. Title continues: "To Which Is Added a Plan of the Rivers, Scoudiac and Magaguadavic Surveyed in 1796, 97, and 98, by Order of the Commissioners, Appointed to Ascertain the True River St. Croix Intended by the Treaty of Paris in 1783 Between His Britannic Majesty, and the United States of America." This uncommon and boldly engraved map extends westward to include Lake St. Francis and the extreme tip of Upper Canada, eastward to part of New Brunswick showing the Saint John River and beyond, and south to just below the Canadian border with New York and Vermont. It is filled with towns and settlements and individual named townships, roads and trails. The 1838 issue marks the "Boundary claimed by the United States" in present-day Maine. The map includes several interesting notations and delineates the "Boundary awarded by the King of Holland" along the Saint John River. Samuel Holland was originally a Dutch surveyor who fought on the side of the British during the French and Indian Wars and served as Surveyor General for the Province of Quebec and the Northern District of America.

Egypt. James Wyld, Lower Egypt and the Adjacent Deserts, with a Part of Palestine; to Which Has Been Added the Nomenclature of the Roman Age by L.S. de la Rochette, 1845 (circa). Hand Color. This beautifully engraved map covers the region from Arab's Gulf to the delta of the Nile and into the Holy Land. It extends to north of Mt. Carmel and south to well below Memphis to Atsieh, Aphroditopolis, and Ellahoun. Scores of villages are located, and numerous roads, trails, and camel routes are detailed and often named: for example, "Derb el Fern - Upper Road belonging to the Haouatat Bedwins." The map is fully and very finely engraved in the deserts to simulate sand. It delineates the Lake of Menzaleh near the mouth of the Nile. In the bottom left corner there are seven distance scales and a table that gives the translation for some common Arabic names. This map is Wyld's reissue of Faden's map of 1802. Delarochette, who also worked with Faden, is responsible for the remarkable engraving.

Presented is Jame Wyld’s Map of the Southern States of North America with the Forts, Harbours & Military Positions from 1861, published out of London. This important map indicates the dividing line between the Union and Confederate states. The map covers the area from Long Island in the northeast to eastern Texas and Indian Territory in the southwest. Kansas Territory is shown in the northwest, despite Kansas achieving statehood in January of 1861. Military bounty lands are noted in Missouri. There is good detail of completed railroads and canals, and the map locates numerous towns and forts including Fort Gibson, Scott and Towsen. Wyld's map was widely used in Britain to demonstrate the conflict in America. The map is dissected into 24 sections, which have been framed together.

Includes a nicely detailed Isle of Candia (Crete) and three distance scales. Wyld assumed management of Faden's establishment in 1823, so this is an early reissue.
