  • Jan Wyck (1652–1700), Hilly Forest Landscape with Coach
    Jun. 11, 2022

Jan Wyck (1652–1700), Hilly Forest Landscape with Coach

    Est: €3,400 - €5,000

Dutch Baroque painter Jan Wyck is most famous for his paintings of battle scenes, hunting scenes, and landscapes. Like many of his contemporaries, Wyck also traveled to England, where he eventually stayed and worked until his death. At a time when French artists dominated the genre, the arrival of Wyck and other Dutch and Flemish artists in the UK after 1660 served as a catalyst for the development of military and naval art in Britain. This multi-figural composition is dominated by a horse-drawn carriage passing through a somewhat overgrown landscape. In front of this grouping are three more freely running horses -one saddled and leading the entire procession. We also see a mother with children, a couple resting under a tree, and three more horsemen. A hilly landscape and view of a city is visible in the background. The whole scene is executed in earth tones with a warm atmosphere.

DIE SCHLACHT VON ZUSMARSHAUSEN Öl auf Kupfer. 39,5 x 47,5 cm. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Prof. Dr. Dr. hc Jan de Maere vom 20. Mai 2021 (in Kopie vorliegend). A cavalry battle below a fortress Signed lower right Oil on canvas, 84.6 x 99.7 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Dutch painter Jan Wyck came from a family of painters and draughtsmen and was a son of the painter Thomas Wyck who was also his teacher. Jan Wyck was most part of his career active in England, where he created a furore with (equestrian) portraits, landscapes, hunting scenes, military scenes such as battles and images of historical figures. In an era when French artists dominated the genre, the arrival of Wyck and other Dutch and Flemish artists in Great Britain from 1660 onwards provided the catalyst for the development of military and naval art in Britain.
