Art doesn’t always have to be serious, as the Austrian sculptor Erwin Wurm has proved time and again. For over two decades, Wurm has been one of the fixed stars in Austrian contemporary art. With exhibitions and galleries across the globe from London to Paris to Seoul, the artist, who was born in 1954 in Styria, also plays a leading role in the international art circus. In addition to the "One-Minute Sculptures" or "Fat Sculptures", Wurm is also known for his pickled gherkins. Sometimes small, sometimes larger than life, as in Salzburg’s Old Town, the green vegetable can be seen as a projection of the human being. Just as each cucumber is unique in its shape, each individual is also unmistakable in his or her physiognomy. Wit and irony are of course always present in Wurm's mental universe. He himself once said, "I simply grew up in the late 50s and early 60s, and the pickled gherkin was simply the symbol of a certain social class. I come from a petty bourgeois family – my grandfather was a railway man, my father was a policeman – and the pickled gherkin was diligently consumed and also went into the sausage sandwich for my school lunch. The gherkin was basically always around!" (GRID – Zeitschrift für Gestaltung, Munich 2013, p. 68). Wurm’s iconic sculpture has long achieved cult status. In this version, too, the gherkin is declared a cult object, whereby the humorous aspect is also strongly in evidence here. Both the silver torso and the pickled gherkin can be interpreted as Wurm’s self-portrait as he has, after all, already depicted himself as a pickled gherkin several times. The work is a wonderful testimony to the fact that Wurm can also laugh at himself. (Stefan Üner)

Erwin Wurm "Liegen auf Elternhaus" 2012 bronze, silver plated 36 x 77 x 42 cm monogrammed and numbered at the side: E.W. 5/5 private property, Austria With the "readymades" of the beginning/middle of the twentieth century, the customary definition of sculpture changed radically. The boundaries between genres became blurred, and to this day the concept of sculpture is constantly being expanded and put into question. Erwin Wurm, one of the most sought-after contemporary artists, deals intensively with this topic and, in a wide variety of approaches, challenges the viewing habits and socially determined patterns of our society. Wurm’s diverse works range from temporary human sculptures (One-Minute Sculptures) and absurdly dimensioned everyday objects (such as "Narrow House" or "Police Hat"), marks left in dust, dressed furniture, cucumber and sausage sculptures, all the way to what are probably his best-known objects – his fat cars and houses. Wurm disarranges and deforms familiar everyday objects, reducing their functions and sculptural qualities to absurdity. Cars and houses that fall out of their usual role through a distortion of form and humanisation seem to the artist particularly well-suited for this purpose. Wurm attracted a great deal of attention with "Narrow House" (2010), an extremely narrowed-down model of his parents’ home in Graz – including the interior furnishings. Between 2005 and 2016, several "Melting Houses" were created, including deformed models of the Flatiron Building, the Guggenheim and the Wittgenstein House; for one exhibition in Munich, Wurm even placed a small, already melting, butter house on a slice of brown bread. Confusion as a creative strategy is the artist’s creed: "When people laugh it can be good or bad. But humour is not the centre of my work. My work is very much related to the absurd. I love absurdist theatre. I think our reality is so fucking crazy as it is that it’s necessary to look at it from as many angles as possible. That's my recipe." From around 1992, Erwin Wurm worked on a group of textile sculptures, which he initially realised in the form of videos; in them, artist friends can be seen putting on their entire wardrobe on top of each other according to Wurm's instructions. Jakob Gasteiger also underwent this transformation into a ponderously fat figure, who additionally put bread in his mouth to puff up his cheeks. In this work, two video stills are juxtaposed to illustrate the stages at the beginning and end of the process. For various presentations in New York and Europe, he transformed the present "test print" into superhumanly large-dimensioned billboards. With his "Fat Sculptures", which he pursued into recent work phases, Wurm reflected on concepts of art production as well as social aspects of consumer society.
