吳穀祥　古柏老僧設色紙本　立軸　一九〇〇年作款識︰霜皮溜雨四十圍，黛色參天二千尺。庚子秋八月，吳穀祥寫於大樹堂。鈐印︰「穀祥之印」、「秋農」。來源︰「二知軒」舊藏香港蘇富比，中國書畫拍賣，二〇〇五年十月，編號1003 梅潔樓藏註：在晚清文人畫家中，吳穀祥以技法嫻熟，構圖精妙有名於時。早歲取法文唐，細筆寫青綠山水，深得吳門心法真傳；中年後面貌生變，運筆雄奇沉厚，畫面不與俗類，往往出人意表。本幅寫於二十世紀之初，屬其晚歲之作。畫面祗見巨柏正中挺立，如拔地昂起，呈插天之勢。上伸枝丫狀若龍蛇盤旋，下繞粗幹，如翻雲捲浪，環環緊扣，造型極盡詭異，堪與「清奇古怪」的四漢柏媲美！上下均以胡椒密點帶出濃蔭舖天蓋地的半封閉佈局，樹側有紅衣僧人盤膝坐於蒲團上，狀若面壁，默對如此奇詭之境潛心修行，以求悟道。全畫色調沉厚，惟老僧紅衣頓生點晴之效，而用筆老辣，運轉頓折間，如虎虎生風，呈拙中見巧之功。縱觀吳穀祥筆下作品，怪奇大胆若本幅者，莫之有也！ 198.7 x 74.5 cm 78¼ x 29⅜ in. ---------------------------------------------- Wu Guxiang 1848-1903 Monk by Cypress ink and colour on paper, hanging scroll signed, dated 1900, inscribed, with 2 seals of the artist 198.7 x 74.5 cm 78¼ x 29⅜ in.

吳穀祥　十二月令山水冊設色紙本　十二開冊　一八九四年作款識︰〈一〉今朝元日試題詩，又簇辛盤舉酒巵。楊柳弄黃梅吐白，一年歡賞動頭時。此石田先生題〈歲朝圖〉詩也，余見是圖不下五六幀，多書此詩，詩固神似，集中未載，而畫多贗本，冬心金先生曾有橅本，亦書此詩，位置天然，饒有氣韻，迥異舊時所見，茲背摹大意。甲午四月，秋圃老農吳穀祥。〈二〉杏花二月晚風和，臨水人家半養鵝。一帶窗欄流影活，雨餘新漲綠波多。六如居士學於周東邨而伐毛洗髓，自出性靈，遂為藝林獨絕。此幀略師六如筆意。秋農。〈三〉三月東風吹雪消，南湖山色翠如澆。一聲羗篴無人見，只有梅花落野橋。秋農寫於芳草廬中。〈四〉四月園林初雨後，樹陰菭色綠茫茫。李竹嬾句。秋圃老農寫。〈五〉江城五月落梅花。寫李青蓮句。秋圃老農。〈六〉六月買松風，世間恐無價。秋圃老農寫於滬瀆。〈七〉南湖秋泛圖。臨沈石田本。秋農。江南七月火西流，殘暑蕭然一雨收。手托美容驚欲暮，身如蒲柳不禁秋。涼風作意侵團扇，斛日多情上小樓。有釣南湖將艇子，晚香吹滿白蘋洲。錄文衡山詩。秋圃老農。〈八〉八月江南未隕霜，青楓欲赤碧梧黃。停橈空對西山晚，新雁題詩小著行。秋圃老農吳穀祥。〈九〉九月九日先生出宅邊菊花坐，久之，滿手把菊，值白衣人送酒，即對花獨酌。寫泉明故事一則。秋農。〈十〉十月河隄柳正黃，扁舟乘興傍魚梁。持竿把卷不歸去，一任溪山隱夕陽。秋農。〈十一〉仲冬霜隕，坐古樹下，把卷微吟，青黃紅紫，紛紛而墜，與吟聲相畣，亦一快也。見新羅有此，對臨一過。〈十二〉歲聿云暮，日月就除，農事已休，春耕未起。紙窗明暖，梅影蕭疏，雪月燈熒，夜幃茶熟。此時一盆火，一缾花，煨芋數頭，家人姬侍，相與守歲。圍爐燒棗焚木，檢點一年區處，花月幾何，逋欠書畫債若干，更以文心之波，旁及聲律，令小童歌自製詞一兩章，覺枯寂之氣，一時遣去，鬚眉毫髮，溫溫然有生意。此老農極風致、極快樂事也。光緒甲午四月，雨窗寫此一十二幀遣寂。秋圃老農吳穀祥。鈐印︰每開具畫家鈐印一至二方。註：吳秋農北遊，旅居京師多年，畫藝廣獲賞識，為時人所重，聲名大噪。本冊寫於一八九四年初夏，題「寫於滬瀆」，應歸滬勾留所出。冊中十二開，各題詠月份句，引詩文意圖之，景物按月序遷移。筆法主吳門文唐一路，蒼秀清曠，偏近文人氣息，亦有謂師新羅而見浙派餘緒者。構圖自生機杼，實經年臨摹積累所得，此亦陸廉夫謂其「食古鎔化，一著手即入古人之室」。造境去雕飾險詭，聚焦文士逸趣，山齋寄情，野艇泛棹，自然拔俗，觀之有移家之想。因寫以自遣，無拘情感流露，末開長題，描述與家人守歲，歡嘆曰「此老農極風致、極快樂事也」，一洗赴京前畫名不顯之困頓，舒心愜意表露無遺，亦堪作畫家對理想生活之寫照也！ each 34.3 x 38 cm 13½ x 14⅞ in.(12) ---------------------------------------------- Wu Guxiang 1848-1903 Landscapes of Twelve Months ink and colour on paper, album of 12 leaves signed, dated 1894, inscribed, with 1 to 2 seals on each leaf each 34.3 x 38 cm 13½ x 14⅞ in.(12)

Collection of Afonso Chen, Canada Mr. LEUNG KIM WAH, an investment banker and avid collector, integrates his passion for art with his cultural activities. He has resided in Canada for four decades where he has held senior positions with major Canadian banks, and currently sits on the board of governors of the Chinese Culture Centre of Greater Toronto, as well as boards of Crown corporations of Canada. Mr. Leung regularly makes charitable contributions to universities, hospitals and Chinese communities. Mr. Leung has developed close relationships with other collectors, having acquired fan paintings and many scroll paintings from the collection of the late Afonso Chen（陳毅生), a prominent attorney in Macau. Several paintings from this collection have been exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum and illustrated in the accompanying catalogue More Than Keeping Cool: Chinese Fans and Fan Painting. Other pieces in Mr. Leung’s collection were purchased through the Chen family, well-known Southeast Asian collectors of paintings and calligraphy from the Lingnan and other schools, who also resided in Canada.
