Changshi Wu Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Calligrapher

(b Zhejiang Province, China, 1844; d Shanghai, 1927) Chinese Painter and Calligrapher. Wu Changshi was born into a modest but scholarly Confucian family. He was devoted to his studies of the classics and began the track of government-administered exams that would lead him to higher education. However, in 1861 he was forced to flee his home during the violent Taipei rebellion. Wu turned to the peace and nostalgia of traditional Chinese painting with ink and colors. He revived a number of ancient scripts and developed his own style of calligraphy, which became much sought after. He was also renowned for his skill at traditional seal carving. Wu’s calligraphy was often accompanied by a flower motif; he was most famous for his depictions of plum blossoms. Wu’s work was influential to many Chinese painters who came after him; particularly those of the romantic Shanghai School, who glorified the artist as an individual and most valued art created purely for the sake of art.

A FIELD-BLUE FROZEN SEAL BY WU CHANGSHUO

    Est: ¥50,000 - ¥80,000

Field-Blue Frozen Stone" (天蓝冻石) is a precious type of Shoushan stone, characterized by a slightly bluish hue, which is transparent or semi-transparent. It usually presents a tone reminiscent of the sky after rain or the early morning sky in early autumn. The color is not overly bright but rather elegant and clear, giving a sense of clarity with a subtle blue tint. The main source of Field-Blue Frozen Stone is located at Tianhuang Slope in Shoushan Township. Historically, mining this stone was very difficult, making genuine Field-Blue Frozen Stone extremely rare in the market. Unlike other blue stones, its blue color does not come from the stone itself but is a special effect produced by tiny mineral particles inside, usually presenting a faint blue hue under natural light. The texture of Field-Blue Frozen Stone is fine and translucent, with a surface that may feature cotton-like textures or blue speckles, and the gray-blue areas often contain fine gray-black spots. Due to its rarity and high value, Field-Blue Frozen Stone is often considered a prized possession by collectors.
