          DESCRIPTION: Oil on panel maritime painting by Claes Claesz. Wou (1592-1665) depicting ships at sea, including a Dutch three-master, with Fort Rammekens in the background. Signed "C.C. Wov" at lower right. Previously offered for sale at Sotheby's, New York, June 5, 2009, lot 47 CIRCA: 17th century ORIGIN: Dutch DIMENSIONS: H: 18.75" W: 28" CONDITION: Yellowed and soiled varnish throughout; varnish removed on part of the signature. Minor losses at edges and at upper left. An area of minor to moderate recent inpainting on and around a minor dent at lower left (this inpainting is difficult to notice in regular light, but could possibly become more pronounced if the varnish is removed.) Some possible older inpainting to sky. Scratches to varnish. Moderate scratch, possibly affecting paint, at lower right.           SEGELSCHIFFE AUF STÜRMISCHER SEE Öl auf Holz. 49 x 65 cm. Ungerahmt. Im Zentrum der stürmischen aufgepeitschten See ein großer Dreimaster mit gesetzten Segeln in leichter Schräglage mit holländischer Beflaggung, gegen die weißen, gischtig aufbrausenden Wellen ankämpfend. Links- und rechtsseitig im überwiegend gelblich wiedergegebenen Meer weitere Schiffe bei starkem Wellengang. Der dramatisch, grau bewölkte Himmel mit wenigen hellen Auflockerungen nimmt fast drei Viertel des gesamten Gemäldes ein. Die Beschränkung der Farbpalette auf Grautöne sowie gelb-ockerfarbene und braune Töne sind charakteristisch für den holländischen Marinemaler. (1371436) (1) (18) Claes Claesz.           SEGELSCHIFFE AUF STÜRMISCHER SEE Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 56,5 x 97 cm. Der holländische Maler Claes Wou gehört zu den ersten Künstlern, die sich auf Marinestücke spezialisierten, dabei war es vor allem die stürmisch aufgepeitschte See, mit der die zumeist Dreimaster-Kriegsschiffe zu kämpfen hatten. Auch Fischerboote, die mit den Kräften der Natur kämpfen, gehörten zu seinen bevorzugten Sujets. Das vorliegende Gemälde ist stark querformatig angelegt, was den Eindruck des langen Kampfes der Schiffe mit der rollenden See noch unterstützt. Die Farbpalette beschränkt sich auf bläuliche Grautöne sowie Brauntöne, die für den holländischen Marinemaler charakteristisch sind. (1041031) (12)
