FRITZ WOTRUBA (1907 Wien - 1975 ebenda) Kleine Sitzende, 1952/53 Bronze hohl gegossen, 21 x 18 x 12 cm, Exemplar 362/1000, signiert und nummeriert, Edition Art Venturi Arte. WVZ (Breicha/Janett): 174/2 Provenienz: Privatbesitz Sachsen Der vielfach ausgezeichnete Bildhauer Fritz Wotruba ist einer der wichtigsten Protagonisten der österreichischen Bildenden Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts.

FRITZ WOTRUBA* (Vienna 1907 - 1975 Vienna) Studies, 1973 lithography/paper, 48,2 x 64,2 cm Signature stamp Fritz Wotruba, monogrammed and dated in plate F.W. 1973 ESTIMATE °€ 60 - 100 STARTING PRICE °€ 60 The sculptor Fritz Wotruba is considered one of the most important Austrian sculptors of the 20th century. In his work he increasingly dissolves figuration in favor of geometric abstraction. In 1926, the trained die engraver attended an evening nude course at the School of Applied Arts at the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna and was accepted into Anton Hanak's sculpture class. There he met his future wife Marian Fleck, who was to give up her own artistic career in favor of her husband. Wotruba later attended Eugen Steinhof's class. Your “torso” was shown at the Secession in 1930. Wotruba did not attach great importance to the details; for him, the overall appearance was more important. His human depictions were significantly stretched, taking Egon Schiele and Anton Hanak as role models. Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka can still be felt in his graphic oeuvre and in his early torsos. In opposition to Viennese opulence, Wotruba found his own formal language. In addition to Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Anton Hanak, Georg Minne and his group of figures “Fraternité” were an important influence. Auguste Rodon and Aristide Maillol provided further aesthetic inspiration. He took part in the Biennale di Venezia and had solo exhibitions at the Würthle Gallery and the Folkwang Museum in Essen. In 1930 Wotruba became the youngest member of the “Kunstschau”. During Austrofascism, Wotruba went to Zurich, but was brought back by Carl Moll to work on Hanak's monument to Gustav Mahler, which was never completed. Josef Hoffmann was another supporter of Wotruba. In the 1930s, Wotruba got to know a number of intellectuals, visual artists and writers: Elias Canetti, Hermann Broch, Franz Theodor Csokor, Hans Erich apostle, Herbert Boeckl, Josef Dobrowsky, Georg Merkel, Carry Hauser, Alban Berg, Robert Musik and Franz Ullmann. Alma Mahler's daughter Anna took private lessons with Wotruba. In exile in Switzerland from 1939 to 1945, Wotruba was able to remain artistically active thanks to the protection of Hermann Haller, Philipp Etter, Manuel Gasser and Robert Lejeune. The collector Georg Reinhardt supported him financially and with orders. After the war, on Herbert Boeckl's initiative, Wotruba took over the master class for sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts. Wotruba's students include Alfred Hrdlacek, Alois Heidel and Eduard Robitschko. FRITZ WOTRUBA* (Vienna 1907 - 1975 Vienna)

    Est: €150 - €250

FRITZ WOTRUBA* (Vienna 1907 - 1975 Vienna) Standing nudes etching/paper, 28 x 37,8 cm signed F Wotruba, numbered 3/90 ESTIMATE € 150 - 250 STARTING PRICE € 150 The sculptor Fritz Wotruba is considered one of the most important Austrian sculptors of the 20th century. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

  • FRITZ WOTRUBA: FIGURE I
    Nov. 27, 2023

    FRITZ WOTRUBA: FIGURE I

    Est: €25,000 - €50,000

Fritz Wotruba Figure I 1961 bronze h. 39.5 cm, w. 14.5 cm, d. 15 cm signed: WOTRUBA (punched) numbered: EA III/VII (on the plinth) posthumous casting Erker-Galerie, St. Gallen; since 1984 private property, Schweiz With his abstract interpretation of the human figure, the sculptor Fritz Wotruba is one of the most important Austrian artistic figures of the 20th century. After an initial classical orientation, the sculptor, who was born in Vienna in 1907, found an independent language of form that combined cubist and geometric-abstract tendencies into a homogeneous synthesis. Wotruba not only occupied a central position within Austrian modernism, but also became a role model for an entire generation of artists after 1945, including Marc Adrian, Joannis Avramidis, Alfred Hrdlicka and Andreas Urteil. This bronze sculpture with the short title "Figur I" (1961) not only impressively reflects Wotruba's experimental approach to art, but also marks him out as a great innovator of modern sculpture. He thereby uses a radical language of form that builds the standing figure vertically from cubic elements and abstracts it to the maximum. Wotruba’s intense striving for reduction and abstraction, simplicity and harmony really comes into its own here. The use of bronze also gives the sculpture a classic look and testifies to the highest quality. Whether large or small – Wotruba sought perfection in all his sculptures. "Figur I" is listed in Otto Breicha’s catalogue raisonné of 2002 as number 243. In addition to the plaster version based on a clay model, there are also bronze casts in a limited edition. The casting book lists seven castings numbered with Arabic numerals, and eight labelled "EA", and numbered 0/I and I/VII to VII/VII, whereby the work presented here is EA III/VII (Otto Breicha (ed.), Fritz Wotruba Werkverzeichnis. Skulpturen, Reliefs, Bühnen- und Architekturmodelle ["Fritz Wotruba catalogue raisonné. Sculptures, reliefs, stage and architectural models"], St. Gallen, p. 228, WV No. 243). (Stefan Üner)
