        John Wootton (1686 - 1764), A panoramic English landscape

        Est: £6,000 - £8,000

John Wootton (1686 - 1764) A panoramic English landscape Oil on canvas, unstretched and rolled An extraordinarily rare, enormous, panoramic landscape by John Wootton. The painter is one of the first English artists to paint landscapes for its own sake, while better known for his sporting and equestrian subjects and considered the forerunner to George Stubbs. Here, Wootton explores pure landscape taking his inspiration from the Neo-classicists such as Gaspard Dughet. This particularly rare canvas appears never to have been on a stretcher (possibly because of its vast scale). The paint surface has remained in beautifully untouched condition and although crying out for a clean and a relining, it presents a collector with a unique opportunity to acquire a historically important and beautiful early English landscape painting. Provenance: Collection of John Hall, Charnes and Boughton Estates, North Straffordshire, since circa 1920; Thence by descent Dimensions: 90 in. (H) x 134 in. (W)

John Wootton (c.1682-1764) A bay Arabian stallion being led by a groom, a hound nearby, with a rider and grey horse watering on the far right signed indistinctly lower centre left 'J W...' oil on canvas 65 x 116cm Provenance: Acquired by Algernon Dunn Gardner (1853-1929) from Fores of Piccadilly on 18th July 1913, as of 'The Darley Arabian', Thence by descent Though much later prints after the present painting identify the horse as the Darley Arabian and show the animal as having three white socks and a white blaze, recent cleaning and conservation showed two of the socks to be overpaint and the blaze was reduced to a star and thus in the opinion of David Oldrey, to whom we are grateful for assistance with this catalogue entry, the horse cannot be the great Arab stallion, the Darley Arabian. He proposes as an alternative bloodline that of the Leedes Arabian, which was a bay with a rear left white sock as was his son, Leeds (or Leedes) and thus the present animal which from the clothes of the accompanying figures must date from at least circa 1730, or later, is probably the grandson or great-grandson of the Leeds Arabian. Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The painting has a prominent network of age cracks, more noticeable in the sky where they have darkened with age. The paint layer is stable overall. There is some wear and abrasion to the paint layer. Areas of retouching are not extensive and are well matched to the original. The varnish is semi-matte and even with a light layer of dust across the surface. The frame is in a good condition.

Bred at Brocklesby in Lincolnshire by Charles Pelham, he was later owned by George Montague, 2nd and last Earl of Halifax, winning 6 of his 7 races. That only defeat in 1728 to Smiling Ball precipitated his being sent to stud. There, under the care of John Croft, Old Partner was named the leading sire of Great Britain and Ireland in 1737, 1740, 1741 and 1743. His notable progeny included Tartar, Morton’s Traveller, Traveller, Golden Ball, Cato and Sedbury.

John Wootton (British, c. 1682-1764) The Bloody Shouldered Arabian, with an Arab attendant, within classical architecture, a landscape beyond oil on canvas 82 x 120cm Footnote: Provenance: Almost certainly painted for Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford (1689-1741) in or after 1724 when he succeeded to the earldom, Thereafter at Wimpole Hall, Cambridgeshire, until the estate was sold in 1740 to Philip, 1st Earl of Hardwicke, 2nd Earl of Oxford's deceased sale, London, Mr Cock, 8th March 1741/2 and the five following days, Third Day's Sale, March 10th, lot 15, as "A white horfe, by Mr. Wooton"; Acquired by Algernon Dunn Gardner (1853-1929) probably from Fores of Piccadilly, Thence by descent Literature: Walter Shaw Sparrow, British Sporting Artists , London: John Lane, 1922, p. 110 According to Sparrow (see Literature) there were some nine or ten versions of this painting, which is not surprising since the Bloody Shouldered Arabian is considered one of the most important stallions in English racing bloodlines and since the horse had at least 3 owners in its lifetime. The present version however can reasonably claim to be the prime original since it bears the coat of arms of its first owner, Edward, 2nd Earl of Oxford, who was given it by his uncle, also Edward to whom it had been sent from Aleppo in January 1720 by his brother Nathaniel Harley, who resided there. The Harley family themselves had one other version of the painting which being today at Welbeck Abbey, must have descended through the 2nd Earl of Oxford’s only child Margaret who married in 1734 the 2nd Duke of Portland. That version where the coat of arms is replaced by sculpted relief figures, is signed and dated 1724. Yet another version, signed and dated 1723 was acquired by a later Duke of Portland for Welbeck in 1914 and this has since been sold from there. Unlike both those Welbeck versions, the present painting is unusual – as other versions included it – for having no dog in the foreground. The horse was named after the blood coloured birthmark down its right shoulder and foreleg, to which is ascribed a romantic legend (see Literature, Sparrow, p. 110). The Bloody Shouldered Arabian along with the Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian and the Byerley Turk was, as a true Arab horse, considered at the time a great status symbol, through the considerable problems and costs associated in bringing them to England where at stud they all unquestionably improved the bloodlines of subsequent thoroughbreds. For example, the Bloody Shouldered Arabian was the maternal great-grandsire of Whistlejacket, whose outstanding physical beauty was so famously captured by Stubbs’ portrait of him now in the National Gallery.

Also that animal, considered the first great thoroughbred racehorse of the 18th Century, did not have a long white blaze. The fact the present horse is likewise a bay and has four white ‘socks’ – though now regular in height - may suggest it is a son of Flying Childers.

John Wootton (British, c. 1682-1764) A Chestnut racehorse held by his jockey at Newmarket signed lower right 'J Wootton fecit' oil on canvas 99 x 125cm Footnote: Provenance: Acquired by Algernon Dunn Gardner (1853-1929) from Fores of Piccadilly on 3rd November 1913 as incorrectly of King Herod for £240 and thence by descent The present horse, prior to cleaning in the 1980s, had been ‘disguised’ to appear to be ‘King Herod’ (sired 1758) one of the great stud stallions of the 18th Century. It has been proposed that the present horse may in fact be Sweepstakes, son of the Bloody Shouldered Arabian (see lot 47) but a picture supposedly of Sweepstakes, also by Wootton and dated 1722 was at Christie’s South Kensington on the 9th of July 2014 (lot 121) and showed an animal with a much darker coat. Sweepstakes was grandsire to the great Whistlejacket and was owned by the 3rd Duke of Bolton (1685-1754) whose colours the jockey here seems to be wearing. Sweepstakes won the King’s plates at Salisbury, Winchester and also at Newmarket. Wootton became famous for his classic single-horse portraits such as the present picture, where he presented his subjects “in a classic profile pose, with the form elegantly contoured against a decorous landscape setting” (A. Meyer, John Wootton, catalogue for the exhibition, London, 1984, p. 14). Vertue records him as having “by his assiduous application & the prudent management of his affairs rais’d his reputation & fortune to a great height being well esteemed for his skill in landskip paintings amongst the professors of art & in great vogue & favour with many persons of ye greatest quality” (B.M., Add. MSS. 23076, f. 23b.). Although his many patrons included King George II, Frederick Prince of Wales and Sir Robert Walpole and he was regarded as the highest paid artist in England, yet also as “…a cunning fellow and has made a great interest among the nobility but he is the dirtiest painter I ever saw” (Robert Price in a letter of 1741 to Lord Haddington).
