RICHARD CATON WOODVILLE (BRITISH 1856-1927)THE RELIEF OF LUCKNOW BY GENERAL SIR HENRY HAVELOCK (1895)Oil on canvasSigned and dated '1895' (lower left)181 x 304cm (71¼ x 119½ in.)Provenance:Sale, Sotheby's, London, Important British and Irish Paintings, Watercolours and Drawings, 29 November 2001, lot 28Barnwell Manor, Northamptonshire, Windsor House AntiquesExhibited:Royal Academy, London, 1896, no. 486At a time of simmering resentment at colonial rule, with the British East India Company's annexation of lands including the Kingdom of Oudh in 1856, of which Lucknow was the capital, crippling taxation and religious intolerance, the Indian Rebellion, or the First War of Independence (also referred to as the Indian Mutiny) was sparked in May 1857, by an incident among angered Indian soldiers serving the British East India Company stationed at Meerut. It was quickly joined by Bengal Infantry regiments and civilians, spreading across north and north-east India including to the cities of Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, and Lucknow.Caton Woodville's painting of 1895 shows British soldiers and Indian allies grouped by the walls of a ruined building, perhaps the British Residency itself. The British general Sir Henry Havelock (1795-1857), with Sir James Outram (1803 - 1863) (technically commanding officer, but who had insisted that Havelock should remain in command until the Residency was taken), reached Lucknow on 26 September 1857 - and this is the moment represented in the present painting. At the time of Havelock's arrival, the British garrison at Lucknow had been under siege for five months, and Sir Henry Lawrence, Commander at the Residency during the onset of the attack, had died. Approximately a thousand British troops and 700 loyal sepoys held the Residency, and with them were about 150 women and children of the garrison, after it had been surrounded by hostile forces in July 1857. They were besieged by a force of around 60,000 rebels, including 10,000 British-trained soldiers. The governor Henry Lawrence had been killed in the initial engagement, and had been succeeded by General Inglis, and many other lives were lost in the heavy fighting for the city.An excerpt from the contemporary account of General Inglis was given in the 1896 Royal Academy exhibition catalogue: The annals of warfare contain no brighter page than that which will record the bravery, fortitude, vigilance, and patient endurance of hardships, privation and fatigue, displayed by the garrison of Lucknow. In the event, however, the forces led by Havelock had insufficient strength to be able to evacuate the Residency and thus he himself was caught within the besieged city.Reinforcements under Sir Colin Campbell (1792-1863) were brought into the campaign, and eventually on 16 November the siege was lifted. Cholera had swept through the embattled Residency, and Sir Henry Havelock died of disease and exhaustion on the very morning of the withdrawal of hostile forces. Fighting continued into the early months of 1858, and it was not until 21 March of that year that the British had regained possession of the city and surrounding area.

Richard Caton Woodville Jr (British, 1856 - 1927) Born in England, Richard Caton Woodville Jr. was an artist illustrator and military painter and also the son of a famous American artist, Richard Caton Woodville (1825-1855). The son was born after the death by an accidental morphine overdose of his father. Woodville Jr. studied at the Royal Academy of Dusseldorf, 1872-1875, but left because of a scandal involving him and the daughter of actress Jenny Lind. He completed his training at the Royal Academy in London and then became a special artist for the Illustrated London News. At the London Royal Academy, he also exhibited huge historical battle paintings, which brought "lavish tributes and the favor of Queen Victoria although she did not approve of his many love affairs". In 1884, he began illustrating the American West but reportedly did not visit there until 1890, when he had a roving assignment to depict American and Canadian outdoor life. Along with Charles Remington and Jerome Howard Smith, he covered the Sioux Indian War of 1890 to 1891 and rode with the cavalry, "depicting the final military defeat of the Plains Indians." For the remaining twenty years of his life following his return to London, Woodville was the most prolific illustrator in Europe of the American West. In 1927, he shot himself, having been confined to his home with war wounds and experiencing the death of his mistress.

Signed R. C. Woodville Paintings, WWI Scenes (2)

            Est: $2,000 - $4,000

**Originally Listed At $1000** Richard Caton Woodville (British, 1856-1927). "A Modern Catapult" & "A Gallant Irishman's Splendid Stand", both watercolor & gouache. December 19, 1914 & November 9, 1914 respectively, signed at lower left. Two paintings of WWI dramatic charges and heroic stands by Richard Caton Woodville, an artist who not only helped define the genre of military art but also shaped the public's visual understanding of warfare. "A Gallant Irishman's Splendid Stand" uses a pyramidal formula to capture a courageous moment in which the "Irishman" grips his weapon and stands upon a pile of corpses in trenches as soldiers approach above. "A Modern Catapult" depicts soldiers operating the catapult from the trenches - one holding the trigger, one lighting the gunpowder, one looking out, and a fourth, surrounded by shovels and weapons, resting until it is his turn to help. In the upper right corner, Woodville has provided an illustration of the "Modern Catapult" with a key to identify its parts. Size: 11.5" L x 9" W (29.2 cm x 22.9 cm); 17.625" L x 14.3" W (44.8 cm x 36.3 cm) framed Richard Caton Woodville was born in London to two artists, an American father and a Russo-German mother. He studied art in Germany at the respected Dusseldorf Academy. As an artist, Woodville focused on dramatic military scenes that oftentimes highlighted the power of the British Empire. His work was very popular during the Victorian era, and Queen Victoria actually commissioned several works from Woodville. Illustrated London News sent Woodville to cover the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-78 as well as to Egypt in December 1882 for the war with Britain. Interestingly, most of his work was done in the studio which was filled with all matter of military props and uniforms to use as references. Frederic Villiers claimed that Richard Caton Woodville was the best British battle painter, and wrote that "next to de Neuville and Verestchagin, the greatest painter of war pictures is undoubtedly Mr. Caton Woodville … in his pictures is all the real dash and movement of war". Van Gogh also admired Woodville's work, especially his depiction of the Irish poor in the Illustrated London News. Sadly, by the end of his life, Woodville's work fell out of fashion, and impoverished and depressed, he eventually committed suicide. Despite this tragic demise, his artwork truly defined the military genre through World War I. Provenance: estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA; acquired in mid 20th century from The Veerhoff Galleries in Washington D.C. Est: £6,000 - £8,000

Richard Caton Woodville (1856-1927) - Oil painting - "The Defence of Hougoumont", showing a British Guardsman defending the Chateau from the attack of the French (1st Brigade of the 6th Division) mounted on bay horses, canvas 30ins x 20ins, signed R.Caton Woodville (19)'01 to lower left, in gilt moulded oak leaf and acorn pattern frame and glazed Provenance: From the collection of the late Dr John A. McDonald, Bilsington, Ashford, Kent and thence by family decent Note: The assault on Hougoumont, a key position on the battlefield commenced at 11am June 18th 1815 when the French artillery began pounding the Chateau and farm. The British artillery ranged on the ridge behind, replied and fired on the French infantry arrayed in their columns preparing to advance. The Chateau and the farm complex were defended by Guardsmen of the Light Companies of the British 2nd (Coldstream) and the 3rd Foot (now Scots Guards). Wellington had ordered Lt Colonel McDonnell to "Defend the post to the last extremity". As the French (1st Brigade of the 6th Division) came charging through the main gates the British Guardsman counter-attacked to drive them back. In the struggle the gates were damaged, but Lieutenant Colonel McDonnell's men forced it shut and Sergeant Graham of the Coldstreams dropped the bar in place. The first French attack on Hougoumont had been repelled. What had begun as a diversionary attack by the French on Hougoumont escalated into a pitched battle which drew in more and more French troops as the day wore on. Napoleon had hoped that the assault would draw in Wellington's reserves, but just a handful of those were committed. By the end of the day two British Guards Battalions that had defended Hougoumont suffered roughly 500 dead and wounded out of the strength of nearly 2000. The French had been unable to capture Hougoumont and their casualties filled the woods and fields around.
