      Abraham Woodside o/c Portrait of a Gentleman: A large framed half-length portrait of a man, in a black suit, holding a book almost certainly a Philadelphia merchant, painted by Philadelphia artist Abraham Woodside (1819-1953) Woodside was the son of John Archibald Woodside and had his own studio in the city from 1844 to his death; exhibited at PAFA and the Brooklyn Academy. Signed lower left, dated 1851, "Jones" in white chalk on lower bar of frame. Size: stretcher is 25" X 30", frame is 29.875" X 35.25" CONDITION: All-over craquelure, two small, well-done repairs, one along middle of right margin just above the shoulder, the other in upper right. Otherwise fine.
