Hale Aspacio Woodruff, American, 1900 to 1980, oil painting on canvas depicting a portrait of a woman with bananas. Signed lower left. Framed. Hale Aspacio Woodruff was an American artist known for his murals, paintings, and prints Woodruff met leading figures of the French avant-garde and began collecting African art, which was a source of inspiration for many other modernists, including Pablo Picasso. In 1936 Woodruff went to Mexico to study as an apprentice under the famed muralist Diego Rivera, learning his fresco technique and becoming interested in portrayal of figures. He returned to Atlanta and continued teaching. He began traveling to Talladega College in Alabama to teach and work on a commission for a series of murals. After his return to the United States in 1936, Woodruff applied his understanding of Post Impressionism and Cubism to painting and printmaking for social advocacy. Woodruff was inspired by the racism and poverty African Americans in the South faced during the Great Depression. One of a kind artwork.

Read, Christmas, 1936" in watercolor, lower left. Provenance: gift of the artist, Florence Matilda Read, Atlanta (1936); gift to private collection, Atlanta (1953); thence by descent, private collection, California (1987). Florence Matilda Read was the last white woman president of Spelman College from 1927 to 1953. The owner's mother was an art student of Hale Woodruff's at Spelman College in the later 1930s and later worked a librarian there in the early 1950s. When Read retired, she gifted this watercolor to the owner's mother. This vibrant modernist scene is a scarce example of Hale Woodruff's watercolor painting from his brief Mexican period. With a General Education Board Fellowship, Woodruff traveled with International Institute of Teachers College at Columbia Universtiy to study the mural movement in Mexico. Over a six week period, he visited Cuernavaca, Taxco, San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City in the summer of 1936. Upon his arrival, Woodruff had the opportunity to work as Diego Rivera's assistant, painting fresco panels for the ballroom of the Hotel Reforma in Mexico City. Woodruff presented a selection of these Mexican paintings in his Exhibition of Paintings of Georgia and Mexico at the Atlanta University Library in 1937. Amaki/Brownlee pp. 64-66.

Born in Cairo, Illinois in 1900 and raised in Tennessee, Hale Woodruff began attending the John Herron School of Art in 1920, studying under William Forsyth. In 1924, he was forced to quit due to financial pressure. Although finances were always a concern, he continued to persevere, winning the 2nd prize Bronze Medal from the Harmon Foundation for a group of five paintings, including 3 landscapes, a portrait of two women, and a landscape with figures. In addition, he entered the Hoosier Salon in Chicago which accepted three of his paintings. Soon after, he sailed to France where he spent four years studying and painting. There he met the notable African-American artist Henry O. Tanner who emphasized the importance of the human figure, as opposed to the landscapes Woodruff preferred to paint. Upon his return to the States in 1931, he accepted a teaching position at Atlanta University. There, Woodruff created and directed the annual Atlanta University art exhibitions which brought African-American artists to national attention. Artistically, his work shifted from provincial landscapes and figure studies to social realist scenes and stylized landscapes. In 1935, he experienced a career breakthrough when he had two woodcuts appear in a major exhibition entitled, "An Art Commentary on Lynching" at the Arthur U. Newton Galleries in New York City. In 1936, Woodruff received a grant that allowed him to assist Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. His work with Rivera and support from the Federal Arts Project compelled him to undertake his famous Amistad murals for Talledega College, Alabama, which were installed in 1939. By 1946, Woodruff had moved to New York City to work at New York University. His work began to take on influence from the abstract expressionist movement and included more and more African imagery. He completed large mural commissions for the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company in Los Angeles portraying African-American contributions to California history and six murals for Atlanta University titled "The Art of the Negro". New York University showed its appreciation for Woodruff by mounting his first retrospective exhibition, covering his work between 1927 and 1967. In reaction to the Civil Rights March in 1963, he formed the group, Spiral, with Romare Bearden, Charles Alston, and Norman Lewis to explore their common cultural experiences as black artists. Woodruff was asked in 1965 by the Department of State's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, to be a member of the U.S. delegation to the 1st World's Festival of Negro Art in Dakar, Senegal. He was also invited to spend a month visiting Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. In 1979, the Studio Museum in Harlem mounted a retrospective exhibition of Woodruff's work. It was to be his last major exhibition. Hale A. Woodruff died on September 6, 1980. Throughout his career, Hale Woodruff succeeded not only in illuminating the black experience and the importance of heritage to African-Americans, but also in increasing awareness of the contributions of African-Americans to the growth of the United States with his considerable talents.

This vibrant canvas is an excellent example of Hale Woodruff's postwar painting in which he described landscape and natural phenomena within the idiom of Abstract Expressionism. This significant and striking canvas shows Woodruff's continued evolution as an abstract painter through the 1960s. In addition to continuing his Celestial Gate series, Woodruff created some of his most abstract painting as landscapes. Landscape is typical of Woodruff's late 1960s compositions with bold, horizontal strokes over layers of both earthy and jewel-like colors. Other significant 1967 paintings are in institutional collections, including Ancestral Memory, the Detroit Institute of the Arts and Figure, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

In 1931, Hale Woodruff was hired by Dr. John Hope to found the art department of Atlanta University, teaching undergraduate students at Morehouse College and Spelman College. Between 1931 and the mid 1940s, he also created a series of linoleum block prints that showed the experiences of African Americans and scenes around Atlanta. Another impression of this scarce print, titled Georgia Youth, is in the Kinsey African American Art & History Collection and Foundation.

Earl Dickerson (1891 - 1986) was a prominent African American attorney. Known as "the dean of Chicago's Black lawyers," Dickerson in 1933 became the first African American appointed as Illinois Assistant Attorney General. He also was counsel and the eventual president and CEO of the Supreme Liberty Life Insurance Company. Famously, Dickerson successfully argued before the U. S. Supreme Court in the landmark Hansberry v. Lee case. Kathryn Dickerson (1905 - 1980) studied fashion at the Art Institute of Chicago. She later served as a founding officer of the South Side Community Art Center, and was one of the organizers of the American Negro Exposition of 1940. Both Dickersons were avid patrons of the arts in Chicago. This Hale Woodruff abstraction is a scarce example of a mid-career work on paper by the artist.

Sunday Promenade portrays the everyday experiences of African Americans in Atlanta, Georgia during the Great Depression. Woodruff explored the pervasive violence of lynching and the mundane suffering of poverty through his works in this series. Here, he conveys liveliness and beauty in a procession of women dressed in their Sunday's best. This linoleum cut is part of a group made over a fifteen year period while Woodruff was teaching at Spelman College from 1931-46.
